I N some respects the study on which this paper is based may be described as the first comprehensive analysis of the career patterns of teachers in colleges for Negroes. This is not to say that no previous inquiries have been made. The truth is, literature dealing with Negro colleges is fairly extensive, yet for the most part attention is focused upon the colleges as a unit, and only incidental consideration is given to the teacher as such
