Evasão: Fugas de prisão e o impasse do encarceramento no Rio de Janeiro
This article examines Brazil’s project of incarceration through the figure of evasion—the act of escaping prison custody, often temporarily. Evasion traces a path across the borders of captivity and freedom, as people routinely flee confinement, only to return of their own accord. This path offers a site to rethink Brazil’s project of incarceration and the forms of life that emerge for those people, largely Black, whose lives are marked by intima…

Evasion: Prison Escapes and the Predicament of Incarceration in Rio de Janeiro
This article examines Brazil's project of incarceration through the figure of evasion (evasão)-the act of escaping prison custody, often temporarily. Evasion traces a path across the borders of captivity and freedom, as people routinely flee confinement, only to return of their own accord. I position both prisons and evasion as part of an ongoing history of, and tension between, Black fugitive life and emancipation in Brazil and the Americas. I a…
Evangelical Christianity as Infrastructure in Brazil's Penal System
This article contends that Brazil's evangelical Christian networks increasingly function as penal infrastructure. Since the 1990s, the scale and scope of evangelical involvement in the criminal justice system have grown significantly. One clear result is that the capillary relationships that constitute Christian community now mobilise resources to support or even substitute the basic functions of punishment. I draw on fieldwork in Rio de Janeiro …

Black Colleges: Continuing Challenges
IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, as has been true in the past, the progress of black Americans will continue to be deterministically related to the viability of black institutions, especially colleges. Whatever may be the racial composition of these colleges in the future or the particular programs they might institute, it will be essential that a significant number of private black colleges remain in the control of black people for the promotion and e…

The Rise of the Negro Protest
Social controls supporting the biracial system in the United States are primarily corporal and legal and are often in conflict with prevailing moral and religious precepts. The Negro protest is not simply against widespread deprivations per se, but rather against "relative deprivations," or barriers designed to prevent them from enjoying certain rights and privileges that are regarded as ethically, morally, and socially legitimate for other Ameri…

The Negro Leadership Class
Civil Rights Leadership (An Opinion Study)
The United States is founded upon -the principles of political democracy, which guarantee all of its citizens freedom, equality of opportunity, and equal protection of tlle law. Inherent in the very nature of democracy is the commitment to change-to make progress toward these goals.'1 This fundamental challenge, to move ahead toward equality of citizenship, was clearly and dramatically enunciated by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863.…
Development of attitudes in respect to discrimination: 1. The formation of social attitudes
A major study of social stratification is Allison Davis and John Dollard's children of bondage. It was designed to explain the personality development of Negro youth in New Orleans, using “social class” and “color caste” as basic concepts. This paper holds that individuals are primarily identified with more limited social segments—“social worlds.” The most significant “social worlds” in New Orleans Negro society are the middle class, matriarchy, …
The Eighth Generation: Cultures and Personalities of New Orleans Negroes
The Role of the Federal Courts in the Changing Status of Negroes Since World War II
The race problem is, and has always been, a national problem of the first magnitude. Yet, it poses a much more serious challenge to Southern leadership than it does to leadership outside the South. It is in the South that the status of Negroes represents the most serious contradiction to the principles of freedom and equality to which our nation is dedicated. And, it is only in the South that the total culture is organized along racial lines desi…
Problems of Faculty Morale
During the early months of World War II industries were challenged to achieve maximum production with relatively limited personnel. This challenge interested some of our top research scholars. These scholars have given us several excellent studies that have pointed up how fundamentally important morale is for top performance on the part of those who must work cooperatively in industries in the military and in educational institutions. Some of the…

Career Patterns of Teachers in Negro Colleges
I N some respects the study on which this paper is based may be described as the first comprehensive analysis of the career patterns of teachers in colleges for Negroes. This is not to say that no previous inquiries have been made. The truth is, literature dealing with Negro colleges is fairly extensive, yet for the most part attention is focused upon the colleges as a unit, and only incidental consideration is given to the teacher as such
