  • Clash of Cultures, When and Where? Critical Comments on a New Theory of Conflict - And Its Translation Into German

    Open Access•Heinz Hartmann•ARTICLE•International Sociology•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 3

In the wake of the Communist collapse in Eastern Europe, we are asked by Samuel Huntington to beware of illusions concerning a peaceful future. In particular, conflict seems to be rife between Islam and the West. This thesis has been dramatised in the media - but a sober assessment of Huntington's text and of some attendant facts would seem to deflate the urgency and the validity of these scary projections. In particular, we deal critically with …

  • Trade Union Confederations

    Heinz Hartmann, Christoph Lau•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•1980•Cited by: 14•References: 4

Confederations of trade unions are shown to accommodate both their own constituencies and their external social environments. This function is unique, and this mission of mediation is an important source of their organizational self-conception and autonomy. In the pursuit of strategy, trade union confederations play a game of trade-off and break-off with their partners in bargaining, and thus become involved in a sequence of dissociation and rapp…

  • Institutional Immobility and Attitudinal Change in West Germany

    Heinz Hartmann•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1970•Cited by: 1

This article encompasses a wide area. For reasons of space alone, it seems advisable to be severely selective in dealing with my subject. Specifically, I propose to focus on items relevant to the national elections of 1969. Second, I shall emphasize social change at the expense of structures since, presumably, a good many readers are familiar with the basic social structures of the Federal Republic. Finally, I will make an effort to single out th…

  • Managers and Entrepreneurs

    Heinz Hartmann•ARTICLE•Administrative Science Quarterly•1959

The rationalization of industrial management has limited the -role of innovation and encouraged the substitution of the concept of manager for that of entrepreneur. The author shows that the distinction is still useful if entrepreneurship is redefined in terms of formal authority. This requires the replacement of Schumpeter's classical emphasis upon innovation with Weber's concept of the entrepreneur as the source of all formal authority within t…
