Scaling the Ivory Tower: Merit and Its Limits in Academic Careers
Following in the tradition of Thorstein Veblen's Higher Learning in America, Lionel S. Lewis has amassed solid evidence to support his conclusions about what leads to success in Scaling the Ivory Tower. As background to his consideration of academic freedom, sexism, merit, tenure, and other such highly charged subjects, Lewis examines the attitudes of those in universities toward academic qualification. The modern rule of thumb has become publish…

Marginal Worth: Teaching and the Academic Labor Market
In the American university system for most of this century, the academic reward system has been blamed for both the neglect of teaching and a glut of uninspiring research. The salaries for faculty at institutions that place special emphasis on teaching are lower than those for faculty at institutions where both teaching and research are expected. In Marginal Worth, Lionel S. Lewis examines the contemporary academic labor market to explain why tea…

Academic Tenure: Its Recipients and Its Effects
A great deal has been written about the pros and cons of academic tenure but little systematic research has been done on the subject. Through an examination of the dossiers— vitae, letters of recommendation, and written assessments—of 115 individuals awarded tenure in 1967 and 1968, this paper attempts to shed some light on the characteristics of those awarded tenure and on its effects. There are large gaps in what writers know about candidates. …
Sex as Work: A Study of Avocational Counseling
This paper examines how sex play is represented in fifteen popular marriage manuals. The authors of these books are viewed as avocational counselors advising Americans about sexual activity in marriage. An analysis revealed that sex play is treated as work by these authors. Those engaged in sexual relations are urged to put forth a great deal of effort. The orgasm is portrayed as the product of marital sex. Other aspects of a job deemed necessary…

Class Consciousness and Inter-Class Sentiments
THE CONCEPT of class consciousness seems to mean many things to sociologists, perhaps because they have not always agreed on the meaning of one of its elements--class.' In contemporary writing the term has been used in five different ways. These, in order of comprehensiveness, are: first, the manifestation of an awareness that a system of stratification exists in society; second, the willingness of a person to designate where he feels he belongs …

Knowledge, Danger, Certainty, and the Theory of Magic
Three variables, knowledge, danger and certainty, have been logically isolated by social scientists as conditions that lead to the utilization of magical behavior. This paper reports an empirical study in which these variables are shown to relate differently to three subcategories of behavior that are generally lumped together under the generic term "magic." It is suggested that a reformulation of "the theory of magic" is necessary so that a deli…
Arationality, Ignorance, and Perceived Danger in Medical Practices
in the notion that certain things are better left unknown. Much more needs to be said about this matter that cannot be said on this occasion. The present exploratory statement suggests that the category of ignorance has a more considerable role to play in sociological theory than has yet been realized. To this writer it also suggests the possibility of a strategic sociological approach to ignorance. It is hoped that future work will bring the pos…

The Functional Theory of Stratification: A Test of Some Structural Hypotheses
A review of previous attempts to test hypotheses derived from the functional theory of stratification suggests that to test the theory as formulated by Davis and Moore, the unit of analysis must be the position rather than the individual: indices of the theoretical concepts must be measures of the stratification structure itself rather than perceptions of that structure: and a universe or representative sample of positions must be used to determi…

The Effects of Race and Socio-Economic Status on Family Planning
This paper examines the relative strength of race and socioeconomic status as predictors of family planning behavior. Information about the contraceptive behavior of 1000 clients of a planned parenthood agency was used to determine if differences between races basically reflect socio-economic differences as is usually assumed. It was found that race rather than socioeconomic status accounted for most of the variance. The implications of this find…

In the Matter of University Governance during the 1960's
Using cases of contested dismissals from institutions of higher learning reported in the American Association of University Professors Bulletin between 1963 and 1970, it is the thesis of this paper that the significance of the 1960's, as far as university governance is concerned, lies in the challenge to the concentration of power of academic administrators by some faculty. The data show that since 1967 the average number of contested dismissals …
