The moderating effect of self-esteem in reaction to voice: Converging evidence from five studies
It has been posited that high self-esteem persons (high SEs) are more confident than low self-esteem persons (low SEs) of their capability to provide meaningful input in a decision process. If this is so, then high SEs should be more influenced by their perceived level of voice, relative to low SEs. Survey data from 4 field studies showed that voice was more positively related to various dependent variables among high SEs than low SEs. In Study 5…
Interactive effect of job content and context on the reactions of layoff survivors
A field survey and laboratory experiment examined the determinants of survivors' reactions to job layoffs. Independent variables included (a) change in the perceived intrinsic quality of the content of survivors' jobs relative to before the layoffs and (b) context favorability,as determined by (a) the perceived fairness of the layoffs and (b) survivors' perceptions of their co-workers' reactions to the layoffs. Both studies revealed similar Job C…
When it is especially important to explain why: Factors affecting the relationship between managers' explanations of a layoff and survivors' reactions to the layoff
Recent research has shown that subordinates are generally more accepting of their managers' resource allocation decisions to the extent that managers offer clear explanations (or accounts) of the reasons underlying their decisions. This study sought to delineate the conditions under which the clarity of managers' accounts is especially related to the favorability of subordinates' reactions. We hypothesized that when subordinates' need for informa…

Personality-trait descriptions of differentially liked persons
Interpersonal attitudes are inferred from a variety of behaviors, among which should be the words people use to describe each other. Each S in 2 independent samples of 50 and 60 undergraduates listed 3 persons with whom he was very well acquainted but 1 of whom was very well liked, 1 disliked very much, and 1 regarded neutrally. These stimulus persons were then described by adjectives from N. H. Anderson's list of 200 personality-trait words. Res…
