  • The Early Infancy of a Parent and Baby Mental Health Unit

Open Access•Sophie Isobel, Alison Green et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2024

The establishment of a new unit provides an opportunity to reflect on the complexity of building workforce, service and clinical capacity within the constraints of public health services. The challenges along the way have helped to build empathy for the experiences of the admitted parents who equally find that things have not gone how they have planned, while finding emerging opportunities for growth, resilience and change

  • ‘A Supreme Fiction’

    Open Access•Alison Green•ARTICLE•Journal of Visual Culture•2017

One of the striking aspects of the trenchant legacy of Michael Fried’s ‘Art and Objecthood’ is its status as a piece of art criticism. Widely perceived as difficult and personal, philosophical and explicatory, doxa or sermon, the essay stands out. To explore its singularity, this article compares Fried’s conception of the period criticism of 18th-century French painting in his book Absorption and Theatricality: Painting and Beholder in the Age of…

  • Understanding same-sex marriage as equality, but with exceptions

Sara Macbride‐stewart, Nicholas Johns et al.•ARTICLE•Families Relationships and…•2015•Cited by: 1

Same-sex marriage arguably promotes marriage equality. This article questions public discourses on equality by analysing the exemptions for religious organisations from non-discrimination that have been granted by the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. The Equality Act 2010 already included exemptions for religious groups, but these have now been extended (NeJaime, 2012). Equality with exemptions has been presented as a reasonable approach tha…

  • When is positive action not positive action? Exploring the conceptual meaning and implications of the tie-break criterion in the UK Equality Act 2010

    Open Access•Nick Johns, Sara Macbride‐stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Equal Opportunities International•2014•References: 33

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the claim that the tie-break criterion introduced under the Equality Act 2010 is not really positive action as is claimed by its government sponsors. It evaluates this claim by locating the tie-break into equal opportunities theory, taking into account merit considerations, and reviews its potential implications. Design/methodology/approach – A conceptual discussion of the tie-break. Findings – Th…

  • Equal Opportunities and Diversity

Open Access•Martin Powell, Nick Johns et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2012•References: 8

The purpose of this article is to draw on Le Grand's (2007) model of service provision of ends and means (trust, targets, voice and choice) to critique the accepted frameworks for conceptualising the chronology of equal opportunities and diversity (EO&D) in the UK. We do this by reviewing the attempts to provide a chronological analysis before outlining and applying Le Grand's (2007) model. We find that the ‘eras’ of the chronologies give way to …

  • Religion, public policy and equalizing opportunities

    Open Access•Alison Green, Adrian Barton et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This paper examines the role of Faith-Based Groups (FBGs) in social and public policy. Specifically it provides an analysis of the conflicts that can arise between the culture and values of different FBGs and welfare provision. Its purpose is to clarify the source of this conflict and to contribute a balanced discussion on how equality legislation should apply to different religious groups. We commence by providing some historical and policy cont…

  • Cornish ethnicity and undercounting

    Open Access•Kerryn Husk, Alison Green•ARTICLE•Methodological Innovations Online•2012•References: 18

In this paper we outline results from exploratory research which aimed to provide better estimates of self-identified Cornish ethnic group affiliation in Cornwall, a county in the South West of the UK. For the first time the 2001 England and Wales Census recorded a 'write-in' Cornish identity category – however the lack of a dedicated tick-box and limited publicity around the option meant that the result was likely to undercount the true populati…

  • Diversity in the British NHS

    Open Access•Nick Johns, Alison Green et al.•ARTICLE•Equal Opportunities International•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 41

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the business case for ethnic diversity in the British National Health Service (NHS). It seeks to contextualise issues around diversity within the current political environment, and identify the barriers to diversity in the NHS. The business case has been very strongly argued as justification for introducing both managing diversity and equal opportunity initiatives – here the paper examines the incon…

  • Liberty, National Security and the Big Society

    Open Access•Alison Green, Nick Johns et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The aim of this paper is to place discussion of the Big Society (via the specific issue of counterterrorism) in an international context, by drawing comparisons between counter-terrorism policy in the UK and Australia. The Big Society agenda of the UK Coalition Government has had a significant impact on welfare policy as well as the terms of the debate about how it should be provided for and regulated. The ripples have travelled far beyond the UK…

Indeed, there are numerous oral narratives-whakataukī (proverbs), waiata (songs), haka (dance), karanga (ceremonial call), whaikōrero (formal speech), karakia (prayers and incantations)-from the present d…
