In its specific theories Harris's cultural materialism has often proven illuminating. As a model of and method for studying culture, however, it is seriously flawed. One of the dilemmas it faces is the conflict between its epistemology and the assumption of infrastructural determinism: if empirical science is a superstructural concomitant of a particular infrastructure, then it can be neither more valid than any other view norcausally or practica…

Homicide of patrilateral kin on the justification of "restoring the family honour" is here differentiated from other assaults on family members. It is also distinguished from vendetta, which, though aimed at the restoration of family honour, affects strangers. This study outlines the social characteristics of the instances of homicide, attempted homicide, and forced suicide for family honour that occurred in Israel between May 1973 and December 1…

  • Toward a Semiotics of Middle Eastern Cultures

    Open Access•Roger Joseph•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 5

There exists a growing body of literature which either explicitly or implicitly utilizes semiotic theory to discuss various sign systems in the Middle East. I believe that by exploring these works and linking them to similar studies, we can acquire a fresh perspective on the symbolic life of the people of the Middle East. I do not argue that semiotics can or should replace other paradigmatic approaches to out analysis of culture, but rather that …

  • Mathematics in Structural Theory [and Comments and Reply]

Fadwa El Guindi, D Read et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Cited by: 4

Levi-Strauss, amongst other anthropological theorists, has argued for the incorporation of mathematical formalization into anthropological theorizing. The integration of mathematical formalization with anthropological theory is examined in this article through the structural analysis of fandango (wedding) ritual as it is practiced among the Zapotec in a small village near Oaxaca, Mexico. The correspondence that is found between the details of the…

  • Bride-Price Reconsidered [and Comments]

    Gideon M Kressel, Qais N Al-Nouri et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1977•Cited by: 10•References: 6

A revised consideration of bride-price and dowry is presented. Marriage payments are viewed as status symbols and mechanisms of fluidity relating to stratification systems. An inability to carry out exchange "in kind" (i.e., bride for bride) appears in cases of marriage between groups of different status and is shaped by cultural principles of stratification. The phenomena of hypergamy, hypogamy, and isogamy, along with different exchange currenc…

  • On the Limits of Symbolic Interpretation in Anthropology [and Comments and Reply]

    I C Jarvie, Myron J Aronoff et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1976•Cited by: 5

Symbolic readings of ritual acts rely on a distinction between the symbolic and the instrumental that is hard to sustain. In order that we take public lectures and academic papers-which are certainly ritual acts-intellectually seriously, it is enough that they not be obviously false. A further argument against reading them symbolically is that the symbolic reading involves projection of hidden meanings which have not been intentionally put there.…

  • Sexual Dialetics and Strategy in Berber Marriage

    Roger Joseph•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1976

Two distinctive approaches have been utilized to investigate marriage and the family among the Berbers of North Africa. One has found its focus in the formal organization of political entities; the other in the interaction of volitional individuals seeking to use the moral-legal code for their personal benefit. This paper seeks to examine the paradigmatic consequences of an interplay between these two perspectives. The problem under examination i…

T586, roll 425. My attention was drawn to them by the work of the French historian Max Gallo on the subsidies paid by Italy to French and British fascists. Angiolo Martignoni was a conservative Councillor of State in the Italian-speaking Swiss canton of the Ticino fro…
