Two distinctive approaches have been utilized to investigate marriage and the family among the Berbers of North Africa. One has found its focus in the formal organization of political entities; the other in the interaction of volitional individuals seeking to use the moral-legal code for their personal benefit. This paper seeks to examine the paradigmatic consequences of an interplay between these two perspectives. The problem under examination is the selection of mates. Although the formal model emphasizes the role of the male in determining marriage partners, an alternative yet complimentary viewpoint, placing emphasis on the fluidity of social relationships and the social significance of females, suggests that Berbers possesss an underlying tendency towards bilateral structure and that women play a crucial decision shaping role in the selection of mates and the ordering of familial structure
