  • The impact of data spatial resolution on flood vulnerability assessment

    Open Access•David E Morrison, Lindsay Beevers et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Index-based approaches are a popular method for assessing societal vulnerability to flooding, many of which differ in terms of indicator selection, underlying social data, spatial scale and aggregation methods. They are typically assessed at geographically broad spatial scales to provide a spatial picture of vulnerability for policy and decision-makers. However, aggregation of vulnerability at broad scales also potentially masks the true vulnerab…

Constructed Floating Wetlands (CFWs) are increasingly being used globally in freshwater environments such as urban lakes and ponds to remove pollutants from urban stormwater runoff. However, to date there has been limited research into the use and performance of these systems in saline environments. This study compared the root and shoot biomass growth and nutrient uptake of five different plant species, Chrysopogon zizanioides , Baumea juncea , …

North-eastern Tasmania, Australia has been an area of major production for Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) for over 25 years. Since the mid-1990s, increased oyster mortality has been observed. The purpose of the present study was to identify the agent causing aquatic toxicity and to investigate whether there is a chemical and/or toxicological link between river foam and monoculture timber plantation forests of exotic eucalypts (Eucalyptus nit…

  • Mysteries reside in the humblest, everyday things: Collaborative anthropology in the digital age

    Open Access•Michael Stewart•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2013

MyStreet is an internet‐based collaborative anthropology research project combining digital recording, Google maps and visual‐ethnographic research. It aims to generate a space for a series of ‘minor’ discourses in which ‘venatic’ evidence (Carlo Ginzburg) holds sway. I examine this project and its preliminary outcomes as a revival of the spirit of Mass Observation, a British social movement of the 1930s. Though originally rejected by the Anthrop…

  • Roma and Gypsy "Ethnicity" as a Subject of Anthropological Inquiry

    Michael Stewart•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2013•Cited by: 40•References: 69

Anthropological interest in Romany and Gypsy populations is now intense; but for the first seven or so decades of Anthropology, the field was left entirely to amateur folklorists. Roma and Gypsies may often "not want in" ( Gmelch 1986 ), but they also seem not to fit into existing academic models. Examining various ways in which Romany sociality challenges existing anthropological models, this article assesses the contribution of three explanatio…

  • Psychological concomitants and predictors of violence during political upheaval in Zimbabwe: A content analysis study

Michael Stewart, Peter Suedfeld•ARTICLE•Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict•2012•References: 13

Predicting when political violence is likely to erupt is a major problem for international, national, and local governments and agencies. In this study, thematic content analysis (TCA) was used to measure integrative complexity (IC) and power motive imagery (PMI) in editorials written by the spokesman for President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Decreased IC and increased PMI have been shown to precede and accompany war versus negotiation in internat…

This essay examines four hypothetical docudramas - Smallpox 2002: Silent Weapon (2002), The Day Britain Stopped (2003), The Man Who Broke Britain (2004) and Death of a President (2006) - broadcast in the UK between 2002 and 2006. The article assesses the programmes' critical reception, and situates it with reference to Peter Watkins' influential docudrama, The War Game (1965). It is argued that while ambiguity is a feature of the docudrama form, …

Much has been written in recent years about the ways Gypsies (Roma) relate to their past. One important study of Holocaust memory has used the Roma as a paradigmatic case of a people who forget rather than remember their history. Rather than examining processes of ‘obliterating’ or downplaying the past, the approach taken here is to consider ways in which, despite Gypsy ‘presentist’ rhetoric, the past is ‘remembered’ among Gypsy populations.
