Salience Counts-And So Does Accuracy
The Emergence of Color Cognition from Color Perception
Reporting isomorphism between the perception and cognition of color, this article speculates upon how the two might interrelate and how that relation might be constrained. A pilot study of color perception revealed differences in the perception of color by sex and by eye color of subject. In the present study, we examine results of a triadic sorting task of color terms, finding that for the nine most salient terms in the subjects' color cognition…
Salience Counts
Independent models of basic and nonbasic color terms are combined to explore the domain as a whole. We analyze an elicited set of English color terms, ranked by a combined frequency and order of mention salience index. We find that (1) basic color terms emerge intact as a distinctive category, and (2) the remaining types of terms array themselves in an extended pattern of distribution with respect to the domain's broader scheme of lexical, organi…

Pasteboard Ethnography
I describe a method of teaching fieldwork in cultural anthropology classes by having students do an ethnosemantic exercise on a card game of their choice. Through this experience, students learn how to do simple forms of fieldwork, the emic perspective, and componential analysis. ETHNOGRAPHY, FIELDWORK, EMIC APPROACH

Structural Patterns of Sibling Classification in Island Oceania
The underlying structure of discriminations in the classification of siblings has received considerable attention. Prior research has demonstrated the tendency of patterns of sibling classification to persist, often for thousands of years, in groups of societies that speak related languages. In this paper it is shown that a sample of 223 societies from Island Oceania exhibits 11 structural types of sibling classification linked in a developmental…
