  • Coping and Locus of Control

    Open Access•Michael A Hoffman, Rachel Levy-Shiff et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 9

To address the role of maternal coping and control beliefs in the development of coping and locus of control in their adolescent children, 68 yoked pairs of Israeli mothers and their male, seventh- and eighth-grade children completed questionnaires related to coping styles and locus of control. Regression analyses revealed a strong similarity between adolescents' coping profiles and those of their mothers in a manner relecting the hypothesized im…

  • Innocent bystanders

    Open Access•Rachel Levy-Shiff, RACHEL LEVY‐SHIFF et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1993•References: 20

Basic theoretical paradigms and constructs are identified within the extant literature that may usefully contribute to comprehending the effect of war upon young children as well as the nature of personal, situational, and familial moderating factors. These concerns are illustrated with empirical data regarding infants and toddlers and their response to the recent Gulf War. Potential applications of these heuristic models are explicated for the s…

    Open Access•Aharon Bizman, Michael A Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 19

Adapting Weiner's attribution theory, this study examines Israeli Jews' causal attribution for the Arab-Israeli conflict, their expectations and feelings regarding its course, and their preferred strategies of response. Expectations regarding continuation or escalation of conflict were found to be related to the stability dimension. Increased shame and guilt, as well as reduced pride as Israelis and anger toward Arabs, were associated with assign…

  • Academic Status and Ethnicity as Determinants of Social Acceptance

    Open Access•Joseph Schwarzwald, Michael A Hoffman•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 17

How academic and ethnic considerations combine in the determination of social acceptance was assessed in a short-term longitudinal study. Most previous research suggests that the influence of these status characteristics should aggregate in an additive fashion. Potential shifts were examined in the use of these characteristics in judgments regarding social acceptance across the school year. Seventh-grade Israeli students (N = 721) entering integr…

  • The halo effect

Open Access•Shaul Fox, Aharon Bizman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Psychology•1989

This paper is in response to Nathan's (1986) critique of Fox, Bizman & Herrmann's (1983) paper ‘The halo effect: Is it a unitary effect’. Specific points raised in Nathan's critique are rebutted. Recent numerical analyses are then employed to demonstrate the non‐equivalence of two extant measures of halo‐SD indices and D × D correlations. The SD indices, challenged by Nathan, are shown to conform with at least one commonly accepted definition of …

  • Validating an Attitude toward Computer Scale

Open Access•Meni Koslowsky, Aryeh Lazar et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1988

Although several investigators have developed computer attitude scales, predictive validity of the scales has not been examined. For purposes of the present research, a computer attitude scale was designed and tested on a group of 162 university freshmen. Two factors, the computer as a controlling device and as a challenging instrument, explained a large portion of the variance in the scale; however, only the challenging factor, with predictive v…

Open Access•Joseph Schwarzwald, Michael A Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1988•Cited by: 1

S ummary . It is currently accepted that effective ethnic integration in schools requires supplemental intervention to attain its social and academic goals. The present study evaluated an Israeli preparatory programme addressing the transition into integrated junior high schools. This intensive, one‐week programme of intervention prior to school entrance is aimed at improving school climate and interpersonal relationships between ethnic groups. T…

Integrated junior high school students in 16 classrooms filled out two versions of the Interpersonal Relationship Assessment Technique treating willingness to engage in activities of low, moderate, and high intimacy. In the peer nomination version, students identified three classmates most…

This study assesses the degree to which changes in inter‐ethnic acceptance, due to contact under integration, generalize to one's views of unknown or stereotypic group members. Subjects consisted of 2,530 seventh‐, eighth‐, and ninth‐grade Western and Middle‐Eastern students in integrated Israeli junior high schools. A unidimensional scale was employed to measure willingness to engage in activities of varying degrees of intimacy with acquainted c…

Free play interactions were observed in mainstreamed settings among 36 children with varying degrees of hearing loss (severe loss, profound loss) and normal hearing. Social competence and hearing impairment were inversely related: the profoundly impaired were markedly less skilful than the normal hearing, while the severely impaire…

    Open Access•Michael A Hoffman•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1974•Cited by: 5•References: 6

The study of trash, although long in the forefront of actual archaeological research, has seldom been conducted in such a way as to emphasize the social and cultural context of the rules governing trash disposal. Evidence from the Early Dynastic town site of Hierakonpolis in Upper Egypt is used to support the contention that a knowledge of human patterns of trash disposal can be a valuable tool in the study of the composition and functioning of '…

    Open Access•Michael A Hoffman•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1973•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This article maintains that an unwarranted extension ofour ideas about the Western European Medieval world has led to several problems in many recent treatments of the historical emergence ofanthropological inquiry. Utilizing Byzantine sources, it suggests that the postulated Medieval break in the Western intellectual tradition is non-existent and the result of an over-emphasis on Western European developments at the expense of the larger socio-c…

As a means of conceptualizing the roles of time itself as a significant variable in determining and explaining aspects of social structure, socio-cultural time is divided into three heuristic categories: (1) Synchronic Time (of perhaps a few years or less duratio…

The site, like other Predynastic localities in the vicinity, rests on Pleistocene alluvial silts and stands about 10 feet above the present floor of the Great Wadi.
