The social, economic, and symbolic role of mococho ( Chondracanthus chamissoi ) in modern Huanchaco and at Gramalote, a second-millennium BC maritime community, north coast of Peru
This paper examines the significance of the marine seaweed Chondracanthus chamissoi to the subsistence and economy of modern and second-millennium BC settlements on the Andean coast—specifically Huanchaco and the archaeological site of Gramalote in northern Peru. The extraordinary preservation of seaweed at these sites reveals how ancient populations dried algae for storage, consumption, and exchange. The study also explores the role of seaweed i…
The Purpose Death Serves
Human sacrifice is one of the most dramatic and enduring rituals known to ancient societies. Death of the victim represents the climax of the event because lethal violence produces vivid images that articulate power relations between the organizers, audience, and those sacrificed. This study reconstructs burial treatments, biological profiles, and trauma patterns on 49 human sacrifices excavated from the site El Pollo located 13 km from Chan Chan…
Tendencies on the use and circulation of seaweed along the Andean Coast
Seaweed is widely consumed along the Pacific Coast West of the Andes. Previous work has stressed the chronological depth and traditional knowledge involved in seaweed exploitation, suggesting significant spatial variability and diverging historical trajectories. Here we offer a comparative discussion describing the gathering, distribution, and consumption patterns of these resources. We compiled the available information from archaeological, ethn…
A Diachronic Archaeometallurgy Study of Metal Fishhooks in Huanchaco
Archaeological excavations at three sites in Huanchaco, Moche Valley, North Coast of Peru, have yielded metal fishhooks in domestic and funerary context occupations from 150/50 bc to ad 1530. The marine‐oriented nature of the Huanchaco occupations points to the necessity of using metal fishhooks in their daily subsistence activities. However, metal fishhooks seem to have been of more exclusive usage rather than of common availability. This articl…

Moche chronology of ancient Peru
In the last decade Bayesian analysis of radiocarbon dates has become commonplace for archaeologists grappling with regional chronologies. Here we present Bayesian analysis for radiocarbon dates from Moche cultural contexts from the north coast of Peru with the aim to understand the duration of the phenomenon and to compile all known dates in a single location for future analysis and use. The analysis demonstrates that the long-standing Moche cera…
Murales moche en Pampa La Cruz, Huanchaco, costa norte del Perú
Archaeological excavations at the Pampa La Cruz site have revealed Moche-style wall paintings in a ceremonial structure. This unique find constitutes the first case of this type of mural art in a non-monumental site of the Moche society reported in academic media. The analysis of this evidence suggests that it was a narrative inserted in an expansive political and religious program of Moche society around A.D. 600-700. Additionally, it suggests t…

The archaeological context and circumstances in which the children and camelids were sacrificed at PLC are different from the previously investigated site of Huanchaquito – Las Llamas. PLC raises the question of whether the nature and the purpo…
The Chaîne Opératoire as an Approach to Distinguish between the Ceramic Production of the Viru and the Moche Polities on the North Coast of Peru
Ceramics play a central role in the debates around the relationship between the Viru and the Moche. A recent model considers Negative and Moche-decorated ceramics produced by potters affiliated with the elites to be the cultural markers of the Viru and Moche populations, respectively. Due to the similarity of Viru and Moche plain-wares and the presence of Castillo Decorated ceramics in Viru and Moche contexts, this model sees both types of cerami…

The article discusses fishing techniques utilized to capture such dangerous fish with limited technology. Moreover, it highlights the economic importance of this abundant source of marine food for small-scale …

The Temple of the Fishermen
The archaeology of the Late Preceramic (3500–1800 b.c.) and Initial Periods (1800–800 b.c.) on the north coast of Peru is focused on monumental ceremonial buildings and little attention has been paid to small residential settlements. Here, I introduce the excavations carried out at Gramalote, a fishing settlement that was interpreted as a specialized producer of seafood with a narrow range of non-subsistence activities. Methodological advances in household archaeology
The purpose of this paper is contributing to the development of methodologies to investigate ancient households. Microartifact analysis focuses on the tiny fragments (<1 cm) of ceramics, bone, lithics and shells that are produced as a result of human action. These tiny fragments are much more likely to remain in or near the context where they were originally produced and are often trampled into the soil matrixes of ancient surfaces. This study ap…
