Histories, Micro- and Literary: Problems of Genre and Distance
History is usually assumed to be a single, unified, and rather decorous genre, but a strong case can be made for thinking of historical writing as a family of overlapping and competing genres, "low" as well as "high." Membership in this family changes over time, but in addition to national history it has included such bodies of writing as philosophical history, memoir, biography, literary history, and antiquities. What, then, differentiates these…
The Memoir of Marco Parenti: A Life of Medici Florence
For this vivid description of the world of a Florentine patrician, Mark Phillips draws on Marco Parenti's private letters, ricordanze or diaries, and public history or memoir. When Cosimo de' Medici died in 1464, Parenti foresaw a return to liberty and began to write a history, but his political hopes and his literary ambitions foundered when the Medici party won a decisive victory over their patrician enemies in 1466. Despite this setback, Paren…

Among the manuscripts of the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence there is a copy of an extensive eyewitness account of Florentine politics in the 1460's which appears to have been overlooked by historians of Florentine politics and historiography. Catalogued as Magliabecchi xxv, 272, it is described as an anonymous sixteenth-century manuscript containing ‘Diverse notizie istoriche d'Italia, delle potenze che la dominavano nel 1464 e delle cose segui…

Culture and Stress: A Quantitative Analysis1
Although anthropologists often employ the concept of stress to account for behavior, they have seldom studied differences in the way stressful situations are appraised. Some situations may be stressors in every society, others may be culturally relative. A method for quantifying the perceived magnitudes of events leading to culture shock is described and the results from a study of three sample populations are analyzed. This method has other appl…
Francesco Guicciardini: The Historian's Craft
Francesco Guicciardini: the historian's craft is an essay in the art of reading history, designed to make the works of one of Italy's greatest historians more accessible to the modern reader. It is based on the assumption that historical writing is a literary genre and that histories are essentially narratives, an assumption natural to the Renaissance intellectuals of Guicciardini's time. Focusing on the texts themselves, particularly the Ricordi…
