All that from two symbols?!”
Adolescence (2025) is a hit television show that has sparked widespread debate in both the press and in government houses. In this collaboratively written response, we consider how the show might index relatively new social phenomena – that is, involuntary celibate (incel) culture, social isolation, anxiety about young people’s engagement with social mediascapes – but also reproduce older social fears, such as threats to hegemonic institutions an…
Introduction
The 25th of August 2023 saw the birth of a new hashtag, in Spanish: ‘#SeAcabó’, or ‘it’s over’, to add to the many others that have accumulated following #MeToo. The hashtag arose out a protest following the medal ceremony for the Women’s Football World Cup during which Luis Rubiales inflicted a non-consensual kiss upon player Jenni Hermoso. In this introduction to the cultural commons special section, we prepare the way for our contributors’ con…
Pressing back with Jenni Hermoso
The coverage of the Rubiales/Hermoso kiss in the news and broadcast press and the interest that was generated on social media testify to the complexities involved in seeing and understanding a kiss as an act of abuse. This essay borrows Sara Ahmed’s notion of the feminist snap, seeing the kiss as a breakage. But rather than exploring the non-consensual kiss as an end point, it dissects the moment of the kiss, as captured on camera, so as to make …
"Chantal Akerman’s Bobby"

“Lucid, lively and extremely knowledgeable.” Sight & Sound Catherine Fowler’s study positions Jeanne Dielman as a ‘contrary’ classic, its contrariness arising from director Chantal Akerman’s decision to frame an unliberated housewife through a kind of ‘slow looking’. By choosing to stay with Jeanne in the kitchen, the film both ‘differences’ the canon and diverges from Akerman’s liberated early films, which involved the rejection of domestic spac…
Expanding the field of practice-based-research
In this article my aim is to situate the growing area of academic audio-visual essays within a wider field of practice-based-research. My objective is to look for patterns across this field so as to pose questions as to the history of common strategies for practice-based research. One such pattern is that of comparison. Beginning in the 1970s, I create a joined up trajectory of comparative re-playings using Le Grice’s Berlin Horse (1970) Ken Jaco…

State Systemic Improvement Planning
In the wake of reports of continued gaps between youth with and without disabilities in regard to graduation rates and postschool outcomes, the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) began examining their process for monitoring state implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). OSEP’s revised accountability system, known as Results-Driven Accountability, better al…

Policy Implications of High School Reform on College and Career Readiness of Youth With Disabilities
High school redesign (HSR) efforts currently focus on helping schools prepare all students to be college and career ready. As these initiatives are provided within the context of high schools, students with Individualized Education Programs are impacted by any effort to reform high schools. As a result, policies designed to improve the college and a career readiness (CCR) of all students should simultaneously improve the CCR of students with disa…
Once more with feeling
This article argues for the recognition of a new trajectory of performance-on-video, using work by Gillian Wearing, Kutluğ Ataman and Phil Collins. In this trajectory the artist has disappeared behind the camera to be replaced by real, ordinary, amateur people. Given the contemporary proliferation of recordings of ordinary people performing on reality television and on the Internet, this article asks what the act of artists recording ordinary peo…

Cinema that stays at home
This essay focuses on a number of Belgian films made in Brussels by Gaston Schoukens and Antwerp by Edith Kiel and Jan Vanderheyden between 1939 and 1957. The films these three made did not travel, and indeed for the most part they were explicitly made to ‘stay at home’. They did so in several senses, first, because they were made for a long-wave national or local audience with no intention of broadcasting beyond that frequency. Second, because t…
Evidence-Based Secondary Transition Predictors for Improving Postschool Outcomes for Students With Disabilities
The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the secondary transition correlational literature to identify in-school predictors of improved postschool outcomes in the areas of education, employment, and/or independent living for students with disabilities. Based on results of this review, 16 evidence-based, in-school predictors of postschool outcomes were identified. Of the 16 predictors, 4 (25%) predicted improved outcomes in …
The Day I Will Never Forget
The documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto talks to Catherine Fowler about her latest film The Day I Will Never Forget (2003) about female genital mutilation (FGM) in Africa. Longinotto’s films have consistently interrogated our understanding of womens’ place in the world, and her latest film is no exception. She discusses how she found her subjects: Fardohsa, a midwife who has been campaigning against FGM, a group of girls who have (successfully) …
