  • Evaluation of wastewater surveillance for Sars-CoV-2 in a prison population

Open Access•Gethin Jones, Andrew J Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: Prisons are high-risk settings for the transmission of communicable disease. Robust surveillance systems are required to identify and control outbreaks. Wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 was introduced in four prisons in Wales in March 2022. We investigated its contribution to the COVID-19 surveillance programme. Methods: We evaluated prison wastewater surveillance against eight system attributes using a mixed-methods approach. S…

Open Access•Zia Mehrabi, Ruth Delzeit et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2022

Extreme events, such as those caused by climate change, economic or geopolitical shocks, and pest or disease epidemics, threaten global food security. The complexity of causation, as well as the myriad ways that an event, or a sequence of events, creates cascading and systemic impacts, poses significant challenges to food systems research and policy alike. To identify priority food security risks and research opportunities, we asked experts from …

  • Bhutanese or Nepali? The Politics of Ethnonym Ambiguity

Andrew J Nelson, Andrew Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•South Asia Journal of South Asian…•2021•Cited by: 3

For the group of Nepali-speaking refugees who fled Bhutan in the early 1990s, there exists no consensus ethnonym, but rather multiple terms—‘Nepali’, ‘Bhutanese’ and ‘Lhotshampa’. Based on a mixed methods approach, this article addresses the politics of ethnonym ambiguity by contextualising current naming practices within the group’s legacy of displacement as migrants in Bhutan and refugees in Nepal. In resettlement in the United States, refugees…

    Open Access•Andrew Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Based on 3 years of research with Nepali Bhutanese refugees in the Dallas–Fort Worth region of the southern US, this article asks how house ownership affects the meaning of home in third-country resettlement. While research participants initially depicted the owned house as a recovery of the pre-exile home, their narratives shifted when many started considering moves to the northern states of Ohio and Pennsylvania. In follow-up interviews based o…

  • Architectural tradition and modernity as crypto‐colonial ways of seeing

    Open Access•Andrew Nelson•ARTICLE•History Compass•2019•References: 4

This essay compares the architectural responses to Kathmandu's 1934 and 2015 earthquakes through a postcolonial framework. While rulers and elites used post‐1934 reconstruction to impose their notion of modernity upon the city, in post‐2015 reconstruction, conservationists see an opportunity to remake the traditional city. Instead of framing modernity and tradition as opposing forces, however, this essay reconsiders references to both as markers …

  • A global map of travel time to cities to assess inequalities in accessibility in 2015

Open Access•D J Weiss, Andrew Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2018

Travel time to cities in 2015 is quantified in a high-resolution global map that will be useful for socio-economic policy design and conservation research. Resources that sustain human wellbeing, such as education, jobs and health services, are distributed unequally, with higher concentrations in dense urban areas. Increasing access to such opportunities and services is a key factor in the advancement of fair and sustainable development. Integrat…

  • Betrayed by the Neoliberal State, Neglected by the “ Jangali ” Company

    Open Access•Andrew J Nelson, Andrew Nelson•ARTICLE•City & Society•2017

Like much of the global spread of gated communities and fortified enclaves, the emergence of Kathmandu's “housing” industry (housing colonies and apartment complexes) grew out of neoliberal reforms. The restructuring of Nepal's economy and government created the conditions for privatized housing infrastructure, management, and services to cater to elites dissatisfied with the post‐1991 processes of democratization and declining conditions in the …

  • The other boys of Kilmichael'

    Open Access•Andrew J Nelson, Andrew Nelson•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2014•References: 7

The Kilmichael incident of November 1920, in which an Irish Republican Army (I.R.A.) column of nearly forty men ambushed and killed all bar one of a motorized patrol of eighteen Auxiliary Division Royal Irish Constabulary cadets, proved to be one of the I.R.A.'s most noted victories of the Anglo-Irish War. Recent historiography has been dominated by controversy over the late Peter Hart's 1998 conclusion that contemporary British claims of I.R.A. …

  • Effectiveness of Strict vs. Multiple Use Protected Areas in Reducing Tropical Forest Fires

    Open Access•Andrew Nelson, Kenneth M Chomitz et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2011

Protected areas (PAs) cover a quarter of the tropical forest estate. Yet there is debate over the effectiveness of PAs in reducing deforestation, especially when local people have rights to use the forest. A key analytic problem is the likely placement of PAs on marginal lands with low pressure for deforestation, biasing comparisons between protected and unprotected areas. Using matching techniques to control for this bias, this paper analyzes th…

  • From 'Unmodern Sherpas' to Madhesi Cricketers

    Andrew Nelson•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 7

In a recent issue of this journal, Kausik Bandyopadhyay (International Journal of the History of Sport 22, no. 4 (2005): 709) lamented the dearth of scholarship that considers sport in India to be a 'serious intellectual discipline'. His observation is ever more fitting for India's neighbor to the north, Nepal, where even 'popular sports histories' are lacking. The one exception would be the global interest in Himalayan mountaineering. As a resul…
