    The Lower Mississippi Delta region surrounds Memphis, Tennessee, in a two-hundred-mile radius. The character of this region has exerted a powerful influence on the applied anthropology program at Memphis State University.     This paper examines a student subsystem in an urban high school in the deep South that is undergoing adjustment to recent court-ordered desegregation. Although the school's administration and academic subsystems have remained relatively un-changed, the student subsystem reflects a new order wherein traditional segmenta-tion is crosscut by new ethnic lines.
