  • Heritagelore and an Introduction to the Thematic Issue on Culture and Heritage under Construction

    Open Access•Lizette Gradén, Tom O''Dell et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Europaea•2021

Taking inspiration in Barbro Klein's work, this article focuses on the production of a particular type of institutional lore that we call heritagelore. Heritagelore, as we are advancing the concept here, is composed of the discursive practices within the walls and the organizations of museums. It is the lore that shapes and at least partially structures the types of stories that directors, museum boards, curators, programing staff, and other muse…

  • Listening to the Elder Brothers: Animals, Agents, and Posthumanism in Native Versus Non-Native American Myths and Worldviews

    Open Access•Tok Thompson•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 1

Contrasting with much of Western discourse, Native American myths frequently ascribe world-creating deeds to non-human animals. Further, Native American stories display a remarkable slippage between the worlds of the human and non-human animals, a slippage that continues into worldview, rituals, and everyday life. Using these stories as a starting point, this article seeks to connect the current theoretical movements in posthumanism with those in…

  • Folklore beyond the Human: Toward a Trans-Special Understanding of Culture, Communication, and Aesthetics

Tok Thompson, Tok Thompson Tok Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Folklore Research•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This article argues for broadening the purview of folklore as a discipline to include nonhuman agents as well and suggests that aesthetics could be productively used as a touchstone with which to begin to connect the discipline of folklore to other studies, particularly ethology, through the theoretical framework of posthumanism

  • What Does it Mean to Be a Human? Green-Skinned Troublemakers and Us

Tok Thompson, Tok Thompson Tok Thompson•ARTICLE•Narrative Culture•2017

This article seeks to illuminate and examine the contemporary cultural roles of nonhuman humanoids in establishing and negotiating a sense of “human” identity, with a particular focus on the marker of green skin. Internet trolls are currently a major problem in our social relations online in the world today, and the belief of extraterrestrial aliens is growing, along with the growth of globalizing discourses. The green-skinned troublemakers are l…

  • The Thirteenth Number: Then, There / Here and Now Število trinajst: takrat, tam / tukaj in zdaj

    Open Access•Tok Thompson•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015•References: 4

The number thirteen has several strong connotations in a number of diverse cultures. What is surprising, and puzzling, are the similarities of associations (the moon, women’s magic, omens, etc). This paper attempts a cross-cultural view of the number thirteen, and arrives at a hypothetical explanation to account for the widespread occurences of the phenomena.Several cultures have been investigated, but the ones in which thirteen is an “ominous” n…

  • Gone Native: Immigrants, Natives and the Quest for the 'Real Alaskan

Tok Freeland Thompson, Tok Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Alaska's large representation of Native cultures, combined with a crisis of identity among non-Natives, has led to the primacy of Native folklore and culture in setting the goalposts for what constitutes a ‘Real Alaskan’. This paper investigates the dynamics of such intercultural learning (from Native to non-Native) in Alaska, with a particular focus on the combination of the everyday and pragmatic with the postcolonial and symbolic, resulting in…

  • Communicating with the Spirits

Wolfgang Behringer, Peter Buchholz et al.•BOOK•Communicating with the Spirits•2005

Focuses on the problem of communication with the other world: the phenomenon of spirit possession and its changing historical interpretations, the imaginary schemes elaborated for giving accounts of the journeys to the other world, for communicating with the dead, and finally the historical archetypes of this kind of religious manifestation—trance prophecy, divination, and shamanism.Recognized historians and ethnologists analyze the relationship,…

Tok Freeland Thompson, Tok Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Folklore Research•2003•References: 4

This essay seeks to understand a particular musical ensemble and related ritual traditions in a rural immigrant community in Alaska. While some of the materials used in the ensemble are gathered locally, other articles are mass-produced, and one element, an interpretation of the Australian dijiridu, is the result of information gleaned from the Internet. The cultural complex is viewed as "local" as well as "global," and "invented" as well as "tra…
