African Interlace as Dynamic Grids
African interlaces are continuous “over-under” paths that can be found in designs throughout the African continent. They include lusona drawings, Orisha beadwork, and related designs from hair braiding, textiles, and other media. But there has been little research examining the common cultural themes expressed, or the common elements of their shape constructions. We begin with an ethnocomputing methodology to show how their visualization of “circ…

Computational reparations as generative justice
The Latin roots of the word reparations are "re" (again) plus "parere" which means "to give birth to, bring into being, produce". Together they mean "to make generative once again". In this sense, the extraction processes that cause labor injustice, ecological devastation, and social degradation cannot be repaired by simply transferring money. Reparations need to take on the full sense of "restorative": the transition to a decolonial system that …

Culturally responsive computing (CRC) frames the localized knowledges and practices of Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities as assets for working toward racial justice in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A key part of CRC is the role that local communities play in designing and/or implementing curricula and technologies. Yet, there is a dearth of research on collaborating with local knowledge experts and what they thi…

Decolonizing posthumanism
This paper describes a decolonial perspective on material agency in the context of STEM education and application. Using the framework of generative STEM, we engaged in case studies with African, African American, South American, and Native American educational communities. This research shows that understanding material agency based on Indigenous knowledge systems can open a rich source of research and education content. Using a suite of simulat…

A mathematical tool kit for generative justice

Culturally Situated Design Tools
Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematical ideas and practices situated in their cultural context. Culturally Situated Design Tools (CSDTs) are web-based software applications that allow students to create simulations of cultural arts-Native American beadwork, African American cornrow hairstyles, urban graffiti, and so forth-using these underlying mathematical principles. This article is a review of the anthropological issues raised in the CSD…
