Place as argument in the rhetoric of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly
This article analyzes speeches from Day 1 of the 2023 United Nations General Assembly general debates to identify a rhetorical model of place-based argumentation that recognizes the impact of talking from and about a place. Such rhetorical strategies may enhance public deliberations on the international stage. Examples are used to highlight place-based arguments that recognize the inextricable linkages among economic, environmental, and cultural …
Reinforcement and the Origin, Rate, and Extent of Cultural Diffusion
This chapter investigates how reinforcement influences the “origin,” rate, and extent of one large-scale social-change process—cultural diffusion. The investigation uses Zvi Griliches’s data on the adoption of hybrid corn by farmers in the Midwestern and Southern states and builds upon the logistic analyses that Griliches did of those data. In contrast, energy input into a social system is a function of relative benefits or reinforcement. Reinfor…
Diamonds in the Rough: Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning in Facebook Pollshare.com Comments
This article studies the argumentative content of online comments posted in response to the Pollshare.com survey, “How satisfied are you with Trump as President?” Positioned within the body of research exploring the public sphere, this quantitative and qualitative content analysis identifies trends in word use, prominent phrases, and argumentative strategies used. A lack of civility and promotion of self-interest are evident in the three main cat…
Bain & Political Capital in the 2012 GOP Primary Debates
Mitt Romney's work at Bain Capital became a centerpiece of the primary campaign in January, 2012. Because its portfolio and practices are so diverse, talking points about Bain were at first unpolished. Such inconsistent and haphazard discussion provided an excellent opportunity to study the refinement of campaign messages to their most politically effective and palatable forms. Furthermore, because private equity is so complex, its net effect is …
Values and Persuasion During the First Bush-Gore Presidential Debate
Appealing to values is an effective form of argumentation. In our analysis of the Bush-Gore debate, we found that values are fundamental in framing issues; their effectiveness is contingent on the issue context and the predisposition of the audience. Thus, merely constructing an appeal to values does not guarantee persuasiveness, as the appeal must be concrete in nature when attempting to move an audience to action. Such an appeal goes beyond cr…

The Diffusion of Collective Violence
Reoriented duct flows of generalised Newtonian fluids are an idealisation of non-Newtonian fluid flow inindustrial in-line mixers. Based on scaling analysis and computation we find that non-Newtonian duct flowshave several limit behaviours, in the sense that such flows can become (nearly) independent of one or moreof the rheological and dynamical control parameters, simplifying the general flow and mixing problem. Theselimit flows give several le…

Arms Races: A Test of Two Models
This is an investigation of two models of arms races: Lewis F. Richardson's linear, additive, symmetric model and a curvilinear, asymmetric alternative based on the same interaction paradigm but with empirical equations from psychophysical experiments on perception as premises. Two hypotheses derived from each model are tested using data from seven arms races. In general, the data give stronger support to the curvilinear, asymmetric model which p…

Reinforcement and the Origin, Rate and Extent of Cultural Diffusion
Cultural diffusion occurs as a logistic process and the dependent variables in this investigation are origin, rate and asymptotes from logistic equations which were fitted by Zvi Griliches to through-time data on the adoption of hybrid corn in each of 132 crop-reporting districts. In multiplicative power functions measures, actual reinforcement to farmers explained 57 percent of the variance in the rate of adoption, expected reinforcement to farm…

On Dummy Variable Regression Analysis: A Description and Illustration of the Method
This paper is concerned with the description of a specialized form of linear regression analysis commonly known as "dummy variable" regression analysis. Efforts are made to show the relationship between "dummy variable" regression analysis and other multivariate analysis techniques with a specific emphasis on the kinds of problems and data that sociologists deal with where "dummy variable" regression analysis is particularly appropriate and usefu…
