At Regular Intervals
This article presents a short play entitled “At Regular Intervals,” which is offered as a piece of applied anthropology. The writing draws upon the author’s own lived experience of having the disability of non-neurogenic bladder failure, which he manages through clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) six times daily (Lapides et al. Citation1972). The central character in the play is Richard Davies, a professor in his late fifties. His sto…
African Philosophy-Based Ecology-Centric Decolonised Design Thinking
This paper uses a declarative mapping sentence approach to explore and amend design thinking - a project development and management technique recently disseminated in Africa. We contend that there are problems in the manner in which design thinking has been exported to Africa, namely, that design thinking is rooted in the linear, binary, human-centric systems present in Western philosophy and that the exportation of design thinking is potentially…
Talking to Our Citizens
In this article, we discuss the ways in which the United Kingdom and the United States communicate health information to their respective citizens. While this article is not limited to the study of COVID-19 health communications, we look at the institutions that were tasked with communication responsibilities regarding the COVID-19 virus in the United States and United Kingdom. To highlight the possible repercussions on the general public of each…
Ethnography and medicine
This commentary discusses the methodological utility of ethnography within the medical space. Whilst a general consensus affirms that ethnography aligns with qualitative approaches, as identified within the existing medical literature, here, we demonstrate how quantitative [positivist] methods can also be incorporated. This paper begins by contextualising ethnographic approaches within medical contexts by demonstrating its empirical value within …
Describing Racist or Racialised Actions Using the Declarative Mapping Sentence Method
In the US and many other countries, when we watch or read the news reports seem to demonstrate that there is an endless stream of racially motivated hateful behaviours and expressions. These are so common place that they may not make front page news. The physical attack upon, and murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the verbal attack on Christian Cooper in Central Park, New York City, both in May 2020, were exceptions that made the news head…
Central Tibetan famines 1280-1400
From the late-1200s to the mid-1400s, the river valleys of Central Tibet experienced both droughts and political upheavals. This combination of inclement weather and administrative dysfunction led to a series of famines. Although the famines were noted at the time, they were later forgotten in Tibetan narratives, and this is the first time that they are the subject of historical study. In this article we analyse the historical narratives of famin…
Facet Theory and the Mapping Sentence
Declarative Mapping Sentences in Qualitative Research
In this book, Hackett introduces the traditional usage of the mapping sentence within quantitative research, reviews its philosophical underpinnings, and proposes the "declarative mapping sentence" as an instrument and approach to qualitative scholarship. With a helpful glossary and a range of illustrative tables, Hackett takes the reader through a straightforward introduction to mapping sentences and their construction, before discussing declara…
The Big Bad Wolf
In this paper we consider the negative sentiments surrounding the return of the wolf to Central Europe. Management plans devised to facilitate human-wolf coexistence have largely focused on wolf biology and the economic implications of the wolf's presence in attempts to inform people and address practical concerns. Yet many people's attitudes toward wolves do not seem in accord with biologically based knowledge. In this essay, we argue that there…

Development of a Scale to Measure Psychosocial Reaction Associated With the Approachability of Family Practice Consultations
The paper reports the development of a 17 item questionnaire to measure the approachability of family practice consultations. Approachability is selectively taken to be a function of the ability to make an appointment and as a perception of whether the family doctor is open and approachable. One hundred and six users of family practice services, were approached on an opportunity basis and completed the questionnaire. Factor analysis and reliabili…
A Multivariate Descriptive Model of Motivation for Orthodontic Treatment
Motivation for receiving orthodontic treatment is systematically investigated and a multivariate model of this process advanced. An interview schedule is developed out of a mapping sentence and administered to a sample of respondents all of whom had been previously classified as having high need for orthodontic treatment (n = 109). Smallest Space Analyses (SSA) of this data revealed two facets of motivation; treatment reason and information sourc…
Orthodontic Treatment
Described within this paper is an approach to the assessment and understanding of the reasons an individual orthodontic consumer possesses for undergoing intervention for malocclusion. The facet theory approach is reviewed as it applies to dental well being and a mapping sentence is proposed as a template which may be employed in investigating treatment motives. Caveats are issued regarding assumptions of simple causal linkages between malocclusi…
The Understanding of Environmental Concern
Social science literature which has addressed concern for the quality of the natural environment is reviewed. The development of multidimensional models is identified as a contemporary theme in this and environmental psychology research. The results of research by Hackett, 1987, 1989, 1992a&b, in press, and Hackett & Florence, 1991, are reviewed and a multivariate model of environmental concern is developed. Commonality of structure is found to e…
Bi-Modal Personality
There is an increasing body of literature concerned with what has come to be known as Bi-modal, or Bi-modality, (personality) theory. This article contains a brief resume of Bi-modality Theory and its two behavior modes of Agonic and Hedonic. The development of a questionnaire to assess personal preference for operating within each modality is reported. The theory is brought to the reader's attention, and a direction in which the theory may be ex…
