Motivational factors and psychological correlates of AI dependence among college students
The rapid adoption of generative AI in higher education has outpaced institutional policy, creating uncertainty regarding AI cheating and appropriate AI use. Building on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework, this study examines the motivational predictors of AI dependence among college students and the psychological states associated with it: “noAIphobia” (anxiety when AI is unavailable) and AI use stigma. To e…
Media cultivation of public outlooks on artificial general intelligence
Building on first-order and second-order cultivation frameworks, we examine how exposure to news and entertainment media portrayals of artificial intelligence (AI) is associated with public perceptions of quantitative estimates of AI development and future outlooks on artificial general intelligence (AGI). The survey data of 713 respondents in the United States were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. Findings showe…
The Role of User Empowerment, AI Hallucination, and Privacy Concerns in Continued Use and Premium Subscription Intentions
This study extends the Technology Acceptance Model for Generative AI (GAI) by incorporating perceived user empowerment (PUE) and two risk factors – privacy concerns and hallucination risks. A survey of 783 U.S. GAI users revealed that PUE directly influenced continuance intention (CI) and willingness to pay for premium service (PAY) and indirectly affected CI through attitude toward AI (ATTAI). Perceived ease of use was indirectly linked to CI vi…
How warm-versus competent-toned AI apologies affect trust and forgiveness through emotions and perceived sincerity
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes more integrated into corporate communication, its role in crisis messaging raises critical questions about audience perception and trust. Drawing on theories of machine heuristics, this study explores how relational cues in AI-authored crisis apologies shape emotional and cognitive responses that ultimately influence trust and forgiveness. A 3 (authorship attribution: AI vs. human vs. control)…
Understanding PM2.5 risk information seeking and processing among South Koreans
This study examines how South Koreans seek and process information about PM2.5 air pollution, amidst concerns of desensitization to its health impacts due to prolonged exposure. A survey was conducted with a sample of 1,500 respondents. Our findings reveal that exposure to PM2.5-related information is positively correlated with risk perceptions and negative emotions. The effect of exposure to PM2.5 information on current knowledge regarding PM2.5…

Impact of misinformation from generative AI on user information processing
This study examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the ways in which users process and respond to misinformation in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) contexts. Drawing on the heuristic–systematic model and the concept of diagnosticity, our approach examines a cognitive model for processing misinformation in GenAI. The study’s findings revealed that users with a high-heuristic processing mechanism, which affects positive di…
Cognitive and Affective Routes to the Adoption of Protective Behaviors Against Health Risks of PM2.5 in China
The current research examines how risk appraisals of PM2.5 influence Chinese people's behavioral intentions to adopt government-recommended protective behaviors through negative affect. In testing the appraisal-based protective behavior model, this research also takes institutional trust and media sensationalism into account. An online survey is conducted with participants (N = 1,569) randomly drawn from heavily polluted Chinese regions. As predi…
News Audiences in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
This study segmented digital news users according to their engagement with news personalization services. A national survey of 1,369 randomly selected digital news users was conducted. Three groups were identified through latent class analysis: Optimizers, Mainstreamers, and Skeptics. Optimizers had the most favorable attitude toward the services and the highest perceived contingency of news personalization. Skeptics showed the least favorable at…
How does fact-check labeling impact the evaluations of inadvertently placed brand ads
With the rise of generative AIs such as ChatGPT, fake news is easier to create than ever before. As a result, detecting and flagging fake news has become a critical task for social media platforms to ensure a safe environment for advertisers. Few studies have examined how fake news labeling influences the evaluation of a brand whose ad is inadvertently placed alongside fake news. We conducted three experiments using different types of fake news a…

The impact of message appraisals of Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty on information seeking and electronic word-of-mouth intentions of US female consumers
The role of wishful identification, emotional engagement, and parasocial relationships in repeated viewing of live-streaming games
Corporate Social Responsibility Beyond Borders
The current research examines the effects of individualizing moral foundations (i.e., fairness and care) on consumer boycotts against the U.S. company that is entangled in an alleged sweatshop issue at a supplier’s factory in a developing country. On the basis of moral foundations theory, the current study tests six hypotheses that demonstrate the theoretical mechanism by which individualizing moral foundations have an impact on consumer boycott …

Will You Join Us?” Use of the Partake-in-Our-Cause (Pioc) Message in Light of Negative News
This study examines the effects of a partake-in-our-cause (PIOC) message in CSR communication on reducing negative evaluations for a company experiencing negative news. In Experiment 1, we tested the effects of PIOC on individuals’ attention to the message, cognitive responses, and company evaluations. Results show that participants exposed to a PIOC message demonstrate fewer negative company-related thoughts and more positive company evaluations…
The situational public engagement model in a municipal watershed protection program
In an extension of the situational theory of publics, we tested a situational engagement model to answer how situational factors affect public engagement via both communication behaviors and the use of social media and organizational media. As part of the evaluation of a collaborative stormwater outreach and education campaign, a campus-wide survey, assisted by a large public university's public affairs office, was conducted to identify key predi…
