The Thrill and Agony of Relief
Recent scholarship on humanitarians and gender, which once focused on aid recipients, has increasingly focused on those giving relief. This paper uses public and private writing to consider the careers of three Quaker women aid workers who were active at aid sites in Europe in the earlier twentieth century. This process has been nothing short of miraculous for us, but adoptive parenting is different from parenting a child of one's own biologically and does not fully eradicate the 'childless' status of those who adopt.
