Contrapassi in Fifteenth-century Italian Dance Reconsidered
In their exhaustive survey of contrapassi and ‘doppi on one foot’ in fifteenth-century Italian balli in the last volume of Dance Research, Lo Monaco and Vinciguerra present a novel and thought-provoking model for the development of these puzzling steps. Its great value lies in opening up new ways of looking at the detailed organisation of steps in such dances; but whether this has any relevance to contrapassi is quite another matter, and many wil…
Colouring the City
A new social ill was placed before America in the early 1980s: ‘black‐on‐black violence’. Like so many urban social issues in recent times, this process was dramatically simplified for easy public consumption. Editorials, features and commentaries profoundly racialised this violence, proclaiming this was at its core black assailants in black cultural worlds. In this context, these implicated (often in grizzly and theatrical detail) isolated and d…
Air photography of the remains of old garden in Britain
The physical remains of gardens were for a long time ignored by the majority of British field archaeologists, being studied only by specialists. It has now become clear that such remains are widespread and often survive as earthworks where the associated house has totally disappeared. Garden earthworks will sometimes overlie and obscure those of earlier phases of occupation of the same site; because of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King H…
A community program to reward children's use of seat belts
This paper reports on a community-wide effort to increase elementary school children's use of seat belts. Twenty-five schools serving over 9,000 children participated in a program of rewards (stickers, bumper strips, and chances on pizza dinners) administered by parent-teacher organization volunteers. Comprehensive observations were made at three representative schools. Categorization of compliance with safety rules required all passengers to be …

The plan of Viroconium Cornoviorum
Most of the Roman city of Viroconium Cornoviorum at Wroxeter (Shropshire) was purchased for the nation in 1973 to protect its remains, which mainly lay in arable land, from further damage by the plough. This part of the city, beyond the limits of the Department of the Environments's Guardianship site, is known very largely from crop-mark photography, tracing the lines of buried foundations by corresponding patterns in a growing cereal crop (Frere…

Two Milestones from Pontus
The two stones described below were discovered by the writer during journeys in Pontus made in the summer of 1958, as joint-scholar of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara. It is hoped to publish shortly the remainder of the material recorded in that and in the following year. 1. Zile, lying inside the castle. Milestone, much weathered. H. c. 1·50; letters 0·03 to 0·08; between lines c. 0·03. For two other milestones of Severus Alexande…
