Consensus-Derived Recommended Skills for Transition to Residency Courses
A National Consensus Process to Establish Common Topics for Transition to Residency Courses
Purpose: Transition To Residency (TTR) courses are designed to prepare graduating medical students to more seamlessly transition into the role of an intern and have become increasingly common in U.S. medical schools.1–3 There is variation in the goals and structure of these curricula and some have begun to conceptualize the “transition to residency” as encompassing most of the post-clerkship timeframe of medical education.4 There is a need for ev…
How Should Health Professionalism Be Redefined to Address Health Equity
Increasing focus on health equity is placing a spotlight on health professionals' roles. Recent public health crises-the opioid epidemic, maternal mortality, and the COVID-19 pandemic-have renewed focus on racial and ethnic inequity and underscored that trust is foundational to public health and health professionalism. Organizational, system, and policy reform demand that professionalism be redefined in terms of its capacity to motivate equity in…
Genetic Predictors of Depressive Symptoms in the Look Ahead Trial
OBJECTIVES: Numerous studies have found elevated depressive symptoms among individuals with Type 2 diabetes, yet the mechanisms remain unclear. We examined whether genetic loci previously associated with depressive symptoms predict depressive symptoms among overweight/obese individuals with Type 2 diabetes or change in depressive symptoms during behavioral weight loss. METHODS: The Illumina CARe iSelect (IBC) chip and Cardiometabochip were charac…
Perceptions and Psychosocial Correlates of Bullying among Lumbee Indian Youth
Although bullying has been linked to suicide among youth, little is known about bullying in American Indians, a population at high risk for suicide. Qualitative data from focus groups with Lumbee Indian youth (N = 31, 16 males, 15 females, 12-17 years of age) and in-depth interviews with gatekeepers in the Lumbee community revealed that bullying is common, and is perceived to contribute to depression and suicide. Youth expressed powerlessness to …
Social Isolation Among Latino Workers in Rural North Carolina
Dental care utilization among North Carolina rural older adults
Regular and recent dental care are infrequent among rural older adults. Contrary to expectations, those not receiving dental care are those who most need care; this has been referred to as the Paradox of Dental Need. Community access to dental care and the ability of older adults to pay for dental care must be addressed by public-health policy to improve the health and quality of life of older adults in rural communities
Dental anxiety and oral health outcomes among rural older adults
About one in eight rural older adults have high dental anxiety, which is associated with poor oral health outcomes. Identifying new approaches to measure dental anxiety among a population with limited interaction with dental care providers is needed
Severe tooth loss in older adults as a key indicator of compromised dietary quality
Objective Poor oral health influences the dietary quality of older individuals. The objective of the present study was to relate the number of teeth to adherence to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans among an ethnically diverse sample of older adults. Design A block cluster design was used to obtain a sample of older adults. Data were weighted to census data for ethnicity and gender. Dietary intakes were assessed using an FFQ and converted…
Oral Health Self‐Care Behaviors of Rural Older Adults
The major factor leading to the use of self-care behaviors is need. Although oral pain does increase the use of self-care behaviors, so do bleeding gums and dry mouth. Research and practice should address self-care behaviors used for oral health problems in addition to pain. Investigators should expand analysis of dental self-care behavior and the relationship of self-care behavior to the use of professional services. Further research also should…
