Spousal Cognitive Status and Risk for Declining Cognitive Function and Dementia
Objectives: We investigated the relationship between the cognitive status of participants' spouses and participants' own cognitive outcomes, controlling for mid-life factors. Methods: Participants ( n = 1845; baseline age 66-90 years) from the prospective Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study were followed from 2011 to 2019. We used linear regression and Cox proportional hazard models to estimate whether spouses of people with MCI/dementia ha…
Associations of local area level new deal employment in childhood with late life cognition
BACKGROUND: Emergency employment programmes during the 1930s and 1940s invested income, infrastructure and social services into communities affected by the Great Depression. We estimate the long-term associations of growing up in an area exposed to New Deal emergency employment in 1940 with cognitive functioning in later life. METHODS: Members of the Health and Retirement Study cohort (N=5095; mean age 66.3 at baseline) who were age 0-17 in 1940 …
Effect of childhood proximity to lead mining on late life cognition
Proximity to lead mining in childhood had long-term effects on late life memory/attention decline and language/executive function, reflecting a possible latent influence of lead exposure. More research is needed to understand behavioral and biological pathways underlying this relationship
The Validity and Reliability of Retrospective Measures of Childhood Socioeconomic Status in the Health and Retirement Study
Researchers who rely on retrospective indicators of childhood SES from the HRS should be aware of their measurement properties. They are measured with error, and that error modestly attenuates estimates of their associations with later-life outcomes. However, prospective and retrospective measures of childhood SES have similar predictive validity. These findings should reassure researchers who rely on retrospective measures of childhood SES in th…

Demographic, Social, and Mental Health Aspects of American Indian and Alaska Native Adolescents in Hawai'i
American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) constitute 2.2% of Hawai'i's population. Unfortunately, very little is known about the mental health of AI/AN youth in Hawai'i. The purpose of this study (N = 7,214; 1992-1996) was to describe AI/AN adolescents versus non-AI/AN youth regarding demographic, social, and mental health variables. The results suggested that AI/AN adolescents were more open to different types of social-emotional supports, ha…

Metaphorical reasoning with an economical set of mappings
This paper discusses the nature of the metaphorical transfer from the source domain to the target domain. More specifically, it explores the question as to how the mapping links between features of the source and the target are created. It is argued that, for many metaphors, it is incorrect to assume that all the elements of the source domain map to elements of the target domain, and that a much more economical set of mappings should be used inst…
Tropismes
Varieties and Directions of Interdomain Influence in Metaphor
We consider the varieties and directions of influence that the source and target domains involved in a conceptual metaphor can have on each other during the course of understanding metaphorical utterances based on the metaphor. Previous studies have been restricted both as to direction of influence and as to type of influence. They have been largely confined to the "forward" (source to target) direction of influence, and they have concentrated on…

The story of Greater Britain
This article describes some of the ways that ‘Greater Britain’ functioned as a component of British national identity for some of those devoted to the ideal of a united empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As outspoken advocates of a united empire, historians such as Charles Lucas and Hugh Egerton, promoted and adapted what was essentially a cultural ‘story’ that helped shape and communicate this identity. The article also…
Reasoning About Mixed Metaphors Within an Implemented Artificial Intelligence System
The phenomenon of mixed metaphor has traditionally been viewed as secondary to the understanding of straight metaphors. This article suggests that such an assumption is detrimental to long-term research. It is claimed that the same kinds of reasoning and knowledge structures involved in understanding straight metaphors are also required in understanding mixed metaphors and that mixing is a central phenomenon. Therefore, any theory of metaphor mus…

Coastal defence and the Habitats Directive
Future coastal defence policies and 'natural' processes will have an impact on habitats within Special Areas of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Areas (SPA) and Ramsar sites. An overview of the potential nature and extent of these changes (losses or gains over the next 50 years) around the coast of England and Wales was carried out to inform policy decisions on the legal and funding aspects of coastal defence options and possible habitat re…
