Ancient Chromophores and Auxiliaries
This paper discusses colorants found in Tumulus MM, the tomb of King Midas or his father, at Gordion, the capital of the Phrygian kingdom. Chromophores, colorants, and auxiliaries are preserved largely independent of the textiles they once colored. The Tumulus MM textiles are now fragmentary due to the degradation processes that occurred inside the tomb chamber. For DHA 26 (Vienna, Austria, 2007), we discussed a group of golden-yellow fragments f…

The section confirms that the topic of emotion is once again, as in Darwin's lifetime, the subject of wide‐ranging, theoretically exciting r…

"Midas' Bed" and a Royal Phrygian Funeral
Midas’ Bed” and a Royal Phrygian Funeral
In 1957, Tumulus MM at Gordion, Turkey, was excavated by The University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, under the direction of Rodney S. Young. On opening the royal chamber, Young found the buried king lying on the deteriorated remains of what he took to be a massive wooden bed, with headboard, footboard, planks, rails, and four corner posts. Reexamination of the “bed” has yielded a new interpretation of this piece of furniture, providi…
