In 1957, Tumulus MM at Gordion, Turkey, was excavated by The University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, under the direction of Rodney S. Young. On opening the royal chamber, Young found the buried king lying on the deteriorated remains of what he took to be a massive wooden bed, with headboard, footboard, planks, rails, and four corner posts. Reexamination of the “bed” has yielded a new interpretation of this piece of furniture, providing clues to the disposition of its parts within the chamber and suggesting a reconstruction of the burial rites conducted for the king
