A multi-faceted approach to analyzing historical police logs
Activating student engagement with concept mapping
With the increasing availability of web mapping application programming interfaces, those tasked with the job of developing and designing web-based geographic information systems (Web GIS) are faced with the question of how to (re)develop new and existing capabilities. While Web GIS often reproduces features currently available within desktop GIS, usage requirements often demand it be both easier to use and more specific in its purpose. As GIS ha…
Violence is the Dark Side of Spirituality
There are many reasons for violence: economic reasons, overcrowding, mental and emotional illness, or long-term hostilities. This article explores a different perspective—the spiritual roots of violence. Violence occurs within the context of a belief system. The article begins by discussing the uniqueness of the person. The author then discusses the impact of death on the human condition, what constitutes spirituality, and how spiritualities diff…
British Victory in Egypt, 1801
In 1800 the British army was the laughing-stock of Europe. A year later, after forty years of failure, its honour and reputation had been redeemed. Trained and led by Sir Ralph Abercromby, an expeditionary force ejected Bonaparte's crack troops from Egypt. An assault landing of unparalleled daring was followed by two pitch battles which broke the enemy's morale. Abercromby died of wounds after his decisive victory outside Alexandria. His eccentri…
Death and beravement
While it is evident that the human person is composed of a material body, the idea that he or she cannot be described adequately in material terms is seemingly as old as the first recognition by a primitive that the human manner of existence differs from that of other animals. The term spiritual has been used to describe this specialness of the human person. This issue of Death Studies concerns itself with the position that persons need more than…
Dimensions of the shadow
This study was designed to assess reaction to the nuclear threat on the part of students in six countries using a common instrument, the Nuclear Threat Index (NTI). The NTI is designed to report on three aspects of reactions: cognitive, affective, and behavioral. The study showed that children in each of the six nations reported accurate, realistic knowledge about the effects of nuclear war and that many children reported experiencing negative em…
Death, dying, and bereavement in China and Japan
The Chinese and Japanese are two ancient cultures that are coping with twentieth century realities in two different ways. The International Work Group On Death, Dying and Bereavement recently visited China and Japan to study their approaches to death, dying and bereavement and to share Western ideas on the same
Palaepharsalus-The Battle and the Town
The accounts of the battle of Palaepharsalus by ancient authors, especially Julius Caesar, are examined in detail. Previous reconstructions of the battle are found to disagree in some respects with Caesar's description of the action, and the claim that the town of Palaepharsalus was at Palaiokastro is shown to be untenable. It is concluded that the battle must have been fought on the north bank of the Enipeus. A location for the battle is propose…
