  • The Debt Crisis: Perspectives of a Bilateral Donor

INTRODUCTIONIn recent years public and media attention to the debt problems of developing countries has been growing. In contrast to the crisis of the 1980s, which largely affected middle-income countries burdened by private commercial debt, the present crisis and ensuing discussions have centered on the poorest countries, most of which are in subsaharan Africa. This article explores the developing country debt issue from the perspective of a bila…

  • Postmodernism and the Sociological Study of the University

    J G Davies, John Davies•ARTICLE•Review of higher education/ The…•1999

Given the provocative views that postmodernists advance about universities, those engaged in sociological work on universities must critically engage this scholarship. This essay concludes that, although postmodernists offer some highly insightful views, the inherent limitations of postmodernism prohibit the kind of analysis necessary to comprehend what ought to be pivotal to any sociology of universities--the relationships between academic insti…

  • The State and the South African University System under Apartheid

    J G Davies, John Davies•ARTICLE•Comparative Education•1996•Cited by: 6

This paper is offered as a contribution to the larger task of providing a comprehensive study of South Africa's universities during the era of apartheid (1948-1990). Because of the centrality of the state to apartheid, the focus adopted is that of the role of the state in university affairs. The inadequacies of state theory in general are acknowledged, but, it is argued nonetheless, that the state warrants special consideration, provided the limi…

    Open Access•J G Davies•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1963•Cited by: 3

Writers in the early centuries of the Christian era were accustomed to employ the term διάκονος with either the masculine or the feminine definite article. In the former case it is to be translated ‘deacon’ and in the latter ‘female deacon’ or ‘deaconess’. This usage suggests a close relationship, if not an identity, between the diaconate and the order of deaconesses and it is the purpose of this Note to explore this subject, beginning with the v…

    Open Access•J G Davies•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1956

Amongst the homilies ascribed to Proclus, one-time bishop designate of Cyzicus and later bishop of Constantinople (434–46), there is included one of which the subject is the Ascension of Christ. The first section of this sermon was transcribed, with the omission of a few sentences, by Photius in his Bibliotheca; he assigned it, however, not to Proclus but to Nilus, an ex-Prefect of Constantinople who had embraced the monastic life and retired to …

  • An Addition To the Reconstituted Creed of Jerusalem

    J G Davies•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•1955

In the history of the Creed, the fourth century symbol of Jerusalem has an important place; but since it has been nowhere preserved in a complete form the determination of its exact text is an essential preliminary to historical study. Our knowledge of it is derived from the Catecheses of Cyril of Jerusalem, delivered A.D. 348, but the disciplina arcani, to which he refers in no uncertain terms , precluded any direct quotation. Consequently the c…

  • The Peregrinatio Egeriae and the Ascension

    J G Davies•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•1954

The date of the Peregrinatio Egeriae 1 has not ceased to be a vexed problem since the manuscript was first discovered in 1883. The document itself provides little assistance in this respect because the few pointers that it does contain are capable of more than one interpretation. A clear illustration of this is provided by Egeria's reference to her visit to Edessa where she saw the martyrium of St Thomas, a church very beautiful and restored (val…
