Materials in movement
Excavated over two centuries ago, the Upton Lovell G2a 'Wessex Culture' burial has held a prominent place in research on Bronze Age Britain. In particular, was it the grave of a 'shaman' or a metalworker? We take a new approach to the grave goods, employing microwear analysis and scanning electron microscopy to map a history of interactions between people and materials, identifying evidence for the presence of Bronze Age gold on five artefacts, f…
Evidence for a mid-Holocene drowning from the Atacama Desert coast of Chile
Effects of scent enrichment on behavioral and physiological indicators of stress in zoo primates
Captive breeding is vital for primate conservation, with modern zoos serving a crucial role in breeding populations of threatened species and educating the general public. However, captive populations can experience welfare issues that may also undermine their reproductive success. To enhance the wellbeing of endangered zoo primates, we conducted a study to assess the effects of a new scent enrichment program on captive red‐ruffed lemurs ( Vareci…
The Belgammel Ram, a Hellenistic-Roman Bronze Proembolion Found off the Coast of Libya
The Belgammel Ram was found off the coast of Libya in 1964, and examined during 2008–9. The following techniques were used: surface non-contact digitizing using a laser scanner, reflectance transformation imaging using polynomial texture mapping and hemi-spherical harmonics, digital photogrammetry with dense surface modelling, structured light optical scanning, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. For internal structure the ram was examined by X-radi…
Lake bed geomorphology and sedimentary processes in glacial lake Windermere, UK
A 1:10,000 map of the geomorphological features and sedimentary processes shaping the landscape is presented for Windermere, the largest lake in the English Lake District. High-resolution multibeam bathymetry and backscatter data, lake bed photography and sediment samples reveal a complex landform record, and have been used to identify nine sub-basins separated by steps, ridges and isolated topographic highs probably related to the retreat of the…
