The Spirits of Satire
Emanuel Swedenborg was a scientist and mystic whose religious writings attracted a large following in the late eighteenth century. Both Immanuel Kant and William Blake wrote satires of Swedenborg’s work, but their satires mask a deep ambivalence. They are fascinated by, and sometimes envious of, Swedenborg’s visionary powers even as they remain skeptical of these powers. Both the poet and the philosopher find a tentative resolution for this ambiv…
Ethics, Identity, and Political Mediation in Right-Wing American Populism
This article discusses the ethics of right-wing populism. Using the works of psychologist Jonathan Haidt, it argues that there is a fundamental difference in the ethical orientations of right-wing populists and their liberal opponents. This difference helps explain the populist distrust of deliberative dialogue. It also sheds light on the political polarization that has resulted from the recent culture wars

The Precarious Integrity of the Postsecular
Both Martin Heidegger and Theodor Adorno lament the disenchantment of the world that results from the secularization process, but both are loath to call for a return to mythic culture. They seek a postsecular source of value independent of both premodern myth and enlightened reason. As is illustrated by their respective aesthetic theories, however, they pursue this goal in dramatically different ways. Heidegger claims that art can offer a glimpse…
