  • Do Implicit Racial Biases Have Significant Discriminatory Effects

Open Access•Timothy Fuller•ARTICLE•Ergo an Open Access Journal of…•2021

This article investigates whether implicit racial biases have significant discriminatory effects. To this end, it evaluates meta-analyses of studies on measures of implicit bias and behavioral effects to which they are correlated. On balance, I maintain, the best interpretation of these meta-analyses and relevant surrounding research supports the conclusion that implicit racial biases are significantly correlated to racially biased behaviors, wit…

  • Machiavelli's legacy

    Timothy Fuller•BOOK•Machiavelli's legacy•2016

Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince is one of the most celebrated and notorious books in the history of Western political thought. It continues to influence discussions of war and peace, the nature of politics, and the relation of private ethics to public duties. Ostensibly a sixteenth-century manual of instruction on certain aspects of princely rule and behavior, The Prince anticipates and complicates modern political and philosophical questions. W…

  • Joseph Cropsey

    Timothy Fuller•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Political Science•2014

Joseph Cropsey dedicated himself to considering both ancient and modern thinkers. He detected fundamental questions about the human situation persistent through every era but often obscured by excessive insistence on opposing “modern” to “ancient.” He envisioned a great conversation among the greatest thinkers of antiquity and modernity in which they recognize a common inquiry into that which they do not yet know, companionable in the conviction …

Walsh's assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of modernity are discussed, and comparisons are drawn to the analyses of Eric Voegelin, Pierre Manent, Charles Taylor, and Michael Oakeshott

  • The Theologico-Political Question of Our Time

    Open Access•Timothy Fuller•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2010

Michael Gillespie speaks of the “theological origins of modernity,” in order to describe both the profoundly religious character of the modern West, and tensions within the Enlightenment and within the progressive philosophies of history that it generated and that are instantiated in the works of Kant, Hegel, Marx, Kojève, and the like

  • Michael Oakeshott, 1901–1990

    Open Access•Timothy Fuller•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2009

Michael Oakeshott, one of the most important political thinkers in the second half of the twentieth century, has been understood to be a skeptical conservative, a romantic, a liberal individualist, an historian of political thought, a philosopher, a charismatic teacher. Each of these characterizations conveys something to be found in his life and work. This essay offers an intellectual portrait of his life's work from early to late through consid…

    Open Access•Timothy Fuller•ARTICLE•Political Theory•1982

IVEN UNCERTAINTY and disagreement about the direction political theory should take, one ought perhaps to welcome a conversational attitude among the parties to the disputes. Yet the conversational pose is hard to strike, and one is always in danger of being convicted either of directionlessness or of attempting to turn the conversation into an occasion for a speech. The exaltation of conversation for its own sake has received its most brilliant c…
