IVEN UNCERTAINTY and disagreement about the direction political theory should take, one ought perhaps to welcome a conversational attitude among the parties to the disputes. Yet the conversational pose is hard to strike, and one is always in danger of being convicted either of directionlessness or of attempting to turn the conversation into an occasion for a speech. The exaltation of conversation for its own sake has received its most brilliant contemporary evocation in the writings of Michael Oakeshott
