Beyond Ideal Theory
Rawls’s contractualist approach to justice is well known for its adoption of ideal theory. This approach starts by setting out the political goal or ideal and leaves it to non-ideal or partial compliance theory to map out how to get there. However, Rawls’s use of ideal theory has been criticized by Sen from the right and by Mouffe from the left. We critically address these concerns in the context of developing a Rawlsian approach to climate justi…
Astrology, modernity and the project of self-identity
This speculative and interdisciplinary article about Western and UK astrology recognises a fluid craft steeped in pre-modern ‘magical’ symbolism accommodating to differing degrees the modern, linear and literal. It embraces an open framework and employs personal experience that highlights the problems with self-understanding. Astrology may appear detached from its traditional religious foundation and has struggled for cultural legitimacy, but it …
Improving learning and accountability in foreign aid
Learning and accountability in foreign aid require project comparisons, but the dominant framework for aid evaluation institutionalizes inconsistency. Today, most aid evaluations are organized in terms of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) criteria: relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact and sustainability. Usually the evaluators determine how to apply each criterion. Also, with donor agencies organizing their own evaluation systems…
Highgate Cemetery Heterotopia
Highgate Cemetery is nominally presented as a heterotopia, constructed, and theorized through the articulation of three “spaces.” First, it is configured as a public space which organizes the individual and the social, where the management of death creates a relationship between external space and its internal conceptualization. This reveals, enables, and disturbs the sociocultural and political imagination which helps order and disrupt thinking.…

Cultural legitimacy or ‘outsider hip’? Representational ambiguity and the significance of Steely Dan
Steely Dan, a rock band which has consistently produced high calibre songs but eschewed celebrity, embodies a particular idiosyncratic rock genre that contains originality, craftsmanship and a critical attitude to art and life. In many ways the core musicians can be regarded as intellectuals whose songs not only offer particular individualised and self‐driven ‘outsider’ identities for the fan but also claim cultural authority. This article explor…
Public art
There is much debate regarding the purpose and legitimacy of public art, which is an integral aspect of the cultural public sphere. The commissioning process, for example, may consider its value and function, influenced by cultural policy and the agendas of intermediaries which impact upon methodological and democratic concerns.Related to these practical issues are a range of theoretical binary tensions which help construct a classification of pu…
Reducing World Poverty by Improving Evaluation of Development Aid
This article argues that given its structural conditions, development aid bears a particularly heavy burden of learning and accountability. Unfortunately, however, the organization of evaluation guarantees that evaluations will be inconsistent and it creates incentives for positive bias. This article presents evidence from organizational studies of aid agencies, from the public choice literature, from eight development projects in Africa, and fro…
The Excluded Terms of Culture
The artistic production of particular disabled individuals and groups in the UK is presented to portray the tensions within and between the social and cultural conditions of inclusion and exclusion. To help understand, articulate and embed these terms Bourdieu’s theoretical discourse on distinction where taste and cultural capital are determined by broader socio‐economic factors, is applied and evaluated. A Foucauldian analysis is also utilised t…

The Reasonable and the Rational Capacities in Political Analysis
The authors employ Rawls's distinction between the reasonable and rational capacities to show why and how rational choice theory cannot provide adequate explanations of human behavior. According to Rawls, the reasonable capacity, associated with the concept of right and the sense of justice, is no less fundamental a moral power than is the rational, associated with the concept of the good and self-interest. Since rational choice analysis presuppo…

A Conceptual Framework for Analyzing, Managing and Evaluating Village Development Projects
The growing literature on Third World rural development project management has begun to reach some tentative consensus. Based on a survey of this literature and research at three Gandhian projects in India, this article presents and discusses a matrix of variables that influence project outcomes. The variables are arranged in a conceptual framework with the assumption that the factors leading to an efficient and well organized project can be dist…
The Effects of Staging on Recall from Prose (Abstract)

Psychometric, diurnal, and electrophysiological correlates of activation
Several studies were performed using Thayer's Activation-Deactivation Adjective Check List (AD-ACL). Factor analysis of college students' scores identified a single activation factor representing a continuum ranging from sleep through wakefulness. Next, changes over the diurnal cycle in activation factor scores were demonstrated. One-week test-retest reliability was also investigated. Finally, activation scores were related to pulse rate, respira…
