War and Peace, Freeze and Thaw
The marching of North and South Korea under one flag at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony was celebrated as a step towards greater harmony in the region. North Korea’s attendance and widespread goodwill during the “Peace Games” even led to talk of a joint Korea bid for the 2032 Summer Olympics. While the 2018 Games were successful in bringing the nations together, the opportunities for long-lasting peace – and a me…
North Korea and the ‘Peace Games’
The reopening of the border hotline between North and South Korea started the process for a unified nation marching in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The event was described as the ‘Peace Games’, highlighting the intersection of sport and politics on a global stage. This article examines the representations in media reporting of North Korea at the 2018 Winter Olympics in six regionally and internationally significant nations. T…
The Hyperlocal ‘Renaissance’ in Australia and New Zealand
Digital disruption has had a profound impact on local news production in Australia and New Zealand. Rationalised newsrooms and the streamlining of local news services has resulted in a decline of diversity in local news stories. Some publications have shut their doors; others now eke out a news service with skeleton editorial staff. The result is that people in local communities are largely losing connection to issues and important stories in the…
Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions
At a time when digital technologies are impacting on the success and sustainability of traditional models of journalism, hyperlocal journalism seeks to restore journalistic integrity, build community, incite change and engage audiences. This book argues for the increased importance of these new forms of localized reporting in the digital age. Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions begins with the fundamental question of what hyperlocal jou…
Changes in journalism in two post-authoritarian non-Western countries
There have been significant changes in journalistic practices in various countries over the years. Yet little is known about the nature of changes in journalism in transitional developing countries following military rule. Drawing on email surveys of journalists in Nigeria and Fiji, two countries with recent histories of military dictatorship that are rarely examined in the research literature, this comparative study investigates journalistic pra…

We are Not Just Participants—We are in Charge’
The 22 methodological elements which defined the community-controlled design of the ear trial may assist community groups, external research bodies and funding agencies to improve the acceptability, quality and scope of research involving Indigenous peoples. Aboriginal community-controlled organisations are well placed to lead research, which can be interventional and of a high scientific standard without compromising the values and principles of…
Citizens' Control of Evaluations
Democratic and participatory evaluation raises questions of power. Power lies not only in agenda setting and problem definition but also in formulating alternatives. The latter seems to have been forgotten in the literature on democratic evaluation. This may be partly due to the general neglect of assessing alternatives in evaluations, whether ex ante or ex post. The article distinguishes different forms of democracy and specifies a model of eval…

Dynamics of Candidate Choice in a State Election
Racial Voting Patterns in the South
Conflicting views have been advanced about racial voting patterns in the South. One contention is that blacks can most easily align with affluent whites rather than with middle or low income whites. A second argument maintains the opposite—that southern blacks' natural allies are more likely to be working class and poor whites. A third view is that one should expect to find shifting electoral coalitions across racial lines. The authors test these…

Redistricting Decisions in the American States
This research tests Riker's minimal winning coalition hypothesis in cases of redistricting in the American states. The authors contend these cases satisfy particularly well the conditions under which the hypothesis should hold, and thus they provide a strong test of the size principle. An examination of cases since 1900 did not provide much support for the hypothesis. Most redistricting plans were approved by rather large majorities, and even whe…
