Russia Invades Ukraine
In the lead up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United States and its allies attempted a delicate balancing act of diplomacy and deterrence. While the United States and the North American Treaty Organization (NATO) brought Russia to the negotiating table, they also issued threats of sanctions and disclosed intelligence to undermine pretextual claims that Russia might make to justify an invasion. Despite these efforts, Russia announced on Febr…

Jewish Biblical Interpretation and Cultural Exchange: Comparative Exegesis in Context
Biblical interpretation is not simply study of the Bible's meaning. This volume focuses on signal moments in the histories of scriptural interpretation of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam from the ancient period to the early modern, and shows how deeply intertwined these religions have always been

The First Jewish Books and the Early History of Jewish Reading
Among the earliest surviving dated Jewish codices are a group of Bibles that were produced in the Near East-Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, and Iraq-between the early tenth and mid-eleventh century. Known as Masoretic codices-because they also are the first Bibles to contain the marginal annotations known as the Masorah-these books have long attracted scholarly attention for multiple reasons- for their biblical texts and Masoretic annotations, …

The Development of Professional Character in Medical Students
The Development of Professional Character in Medical Students
What is a professional? A professional commands a special body of knowledge and skills. A professional also is given specific rights not generally provided to the public, and has specific responsibilities or duties not generally expected of the public. What distinguishes a professional from an expert, then, is the contract negotiated between a specific group of experts and society.[1] In trade for specific rights--physicians, for example, have th…
The return of the subject: Power, reflexivity and agency
The deconstruction of the subject associated with postmodernism cannot be said to have simply carried the day. Opponents and critics of postmodernism have held that we must return to the subject and to autonomy as a necessary condition of thinking about ethics, politics, agency and responsibility. Indeed, Peter Dews has recently argued that efforts to displace the subject repeat rather than dissolve the problems generated by subject-centered theo…

Design of Work-Based Learning for Students in the United States
Work-based learning (WBL) of the 'learn-and-stay' variety prepares for specific occupations or industries, whereas 'learn-and-go' WBL develops more broadly transferable knowledge and skills. Census data from California show that from the ages of 16 to 34, many workers move from industries with lower earning prospects to industries with higher ones. This natural flow might be facilitated by more learn-and-go WBL in low-wage industries and more lea…

Accuracy of Physiciansʼ Predictions of Cholecystography Results
In the decision theory model of medical diagnosis and treatment, optimal choice of diagnostic tests requires accurate estimation of the probability that a given test will be positive. We assessed the ability of physicians to estimate the probability that a specific test (cholecystography) would be positive. For 102 patients, the predicted number of gallstone cases, 35.8, was significantly greater than the observed number, 15 (p less than 0.001), …
