Making Myana (“Mothers, You Are Not Alone”)
Introduction: Many digital tools are available to support healthy pregnancies. Far fewer focus on the postpartum period or have the explicit goal of reducing poor or inequitable maternal health outcomes. Yet, many pregnancy-related complications occur up to a year after labor and delivery. Here, we outline a healthequity-centered process, using multiple phases of data collection, which informed our design decisions when developing a comprehensive…
Narratives of victory
Legalizing a Political Fight
For decades, presidents and members of Congress have actively shifted the separation of powers to provide the executive branch with more room for unilateral action in the realm of war. While this imbalance is clearest when presidents decide to act without the consent of Congress, it is still present and arguably more dangerous when Congress does provide authorization. By examining the legal language used in the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and the s…

Obama, Congress, and Audience Costs
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA ENTERED OFFICE vowing to draw down two wars and revive America’s image abroad. In light of these assertions, his decision to initiate hostilities against Muammar el-Qaddafi in 2011 without congressional authorization took many by surprise. Obama argued the United States had a unique ability to spearhead the operation and a Responsibility to Protect (R2P) the people of Libya. He expressed no qualms about sidestepping Congres…

The Capitalist Peace
From governance to government
Private institutions for third-party (eco-)labelling of food and wood products has been a lively field of empirical research, peaking in the conception of certification as a “non-state market-driven governance system,” which is gaining rule-making authority domestically and internationally as a private governance institution and a transnational regime. Recent findings, however, suggest that state actors also play a decisive role in private certif…
A New Model of Executive Power
The perennial concern over executive overreach continues well into Obama's presidency, leading many to wonder if the “unitary executive” is here to stay. Discussions of executive war powers focus on three models. The Hamiltonian perspective gives presidents the lead position in foreign affairs; the second model, following Madison, presents Congress as the leader when initiating hostilities. Finally, Jeffersonians present emergency powers as extra…

What Is the Difference Between a Hockey Mom and a Pit Bull
This study explores what effect different campaign information frames have on voters’ evaluations of Sarah Palin using data from an online experiment. We show that descriptions highlighting more stereotypically feminine attributes cause individuals to perceive Palin as holding more feminine traits, while those highlighting more masculine attributes lead to higher assessments of her masculine traits. Those that mix feminine and masculine attribute…

Ordering the Artist's Body
Thomas Eakins’s obsession with the body is well known and much studied. But what of the painter’s obsession with his own body? Throughout his career, he inserted himself into his paintings of modern life. We see him rowing, bird hunting, swimming, observing surgical procedures, and even sculpting. In photography too he was ever‐present. While not technically self‐portraits, the many photographs of the painter, candid or posed, clothed or naked, f…
