  • Prenatal Sex-Selective Abortion and High Sex Ratio at Birth in the Rural Henan Province

    Yaqiang Qi, William M Mason•ARTICLE•Chinese Sociological Review•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Based on data from a snowball sampling survey conducted in rural Henan in 2001, we analyze the prevalence, patterns, and risk factors of prenatal sex selection and estimate its impact on sex ratio at birth. Our results indicate that prenatal sex selection is widely known and practiced in rural Henan; ex ante fetal sex and family sibset composition are the dominant predictors of abortion, regardless of maternal heterogeneity; and sex-selective abo…

CONTEXT: Adolescents have among the highest sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates. Rich data are now available to characterize the social and behavioral factors that affect adolescent STD risk. METHODS: Data from Wave 1 (1995) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) are used to estimate school, neighborhood, family and individual level effects on acquiring an STD. Data from Waves 1 and 2 (1996) of Add Health are al…

This commentary replies to a critique by OBrien and Gartney-Gibbs of the authors analysis design in testing Easterlins hypothesis about the impact of cohort size affecting members of these cohorts throughout their lives. The critique reversed the authors conclusion in 1 aspect by finding non-trivial additive effect on political alienation by cohort size as evidenced by a standardized coefficient of .283 and a significance level of 0.18. Joan R Kahn, William M Mason•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1987•Cited by: 25•References: 2

Easterlin argues that his cohort crowding explanation of temporal variability in fertility trends applies to divorce, suicide, crime, and political alienation. Using two commonly employed survey items held to measure political alienation, we show that Easterlin's argument does not account for temporal variability in alienation between 1952 and 1980 in the United States. In addition, we find that a period basis, as distinguished from an age, cohor…

Using World Fertility Survey data for 15 developing countries, we estimate an equation in which the dependent variable—whether the respondent has ever used an efficient contraceptive method—depends on the respondent’s education and location of childhood residence. All of the coefficients of this equation, including the intercept, vary over countries. Analysis based on new methodology shows that the intercept and education effects vary as a functi…

  • The Hierarchical Logistic Regression Model for Multilevel Analysis

    George Y Wong, William M Mason•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1985

A hierarchical logistic regression model is proposed for studying data with group structure and a binary response variable. The group structure is defined by the presence of micro observations embedded within contexts (macro observations), and the specification is at both of these levels. At the first (micro) level, the usual logistic regression model is defined for each context. The same regressors are used in each context, but the micro regress…

  • Multilevel Effects of Socioeconomic Development and Family Planning Programs on Children Ever Born

Barbara Entwisle, William M Mason•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1985•Cited by: 37

This article describes an approach to an explanation of fertility that is sensitive to the dependence of the behavior of individuals or couples on social context and sets forth hypotheses about micro and macro determinants of children ever born (CEB). Data from 15 World Fertility Survey countries are used in a multilevel test of these hypotheses. The findings are that per capita GNP and family planning program effort affect not only country-speci…

    William M Mason, George Y Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methodology•1983•Cited by: 23

A general linear multilevel model and its estimation are described and illustrated empirically. The specification of a multilevel linear model within the covariance component framework was rendered. This model is appropriate for a wide range of applications in contextual analysis because it allows for macro as well as micro errors. Then an estimation procedure the restricted maximum likelihood/Bayes (REML/Bayes) was proposed and described for thi…

An important class of applications of measurement error or constrained factor analytic models consists of comparing models for several populations. In such cases it is appropriate to make explicit statistical tests of model similarity across groups and to constrain some model parameters to be equal across groups using a priori substantive information. This article discusses a statistical model devel oped by Jöreskog for these purposes. The model …
