“That is simply one thing that goes with it”
The involvement of former extremists in preventing and countering violent extremism has attracted many advocates. Interventions in school settings by or with former extremists have been commonplace for a long time, and in some countries even for decades, which is reason enough to focus on the current research state. We did this through a synoptic examination of the empirical literature on the subject. Hence, we took an in-depth look at four exper…

Preventing Violent Extremism with Former Extremists in Schools
During recent years, the inclusion of former extremists in preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) has increased internationally. This paper addresses the issue of the involvement of former extremists in school-based work to prevent violent extremism. It provides a media analysis of the content of 151 newspaper articles (published between 2001 and 2019) regarding 133 lectures given by former extremists in German schools. The analysis …

Trauma and repair in the museum
Despite its considerable investment in questions of memory, attachments between subjects and objects, and trauma and its treatment, psychoanalysis has been largely sidelined in the unfolding reassessment of museums. This introduction to the special issue on ‘Trauma and Repair in the Museum’, which aims to reintroduce psychoanalytic perspectives in these debates, outlines the issues around reparation that surround the modern museum due to the trau…

Biografiebasierte Maßnahmen in der schulischen Präventions- und Bildungsarbeit
For decades, autobiographical narratives have formed an integral part of school prevention and educational work in Germany. They are not only widespread in the prevention of extremism but are also used to impart historical thinking or to prevent violence and substance abuse. For the most part, however, sound evaluations on this topic are not available. This monograph provides the first comprehensive academic examination of school-based prevention…
Planetary thinking
Inspired by re-watching Nancy Holt's and Robert Smithson's film Mono Lake during the first COVID-19 lockdown on the Holt/Smithson Foundation's online Friday film season, this essay explores a series of reflections on ecology, viruses and art's relation to planetary thinking. Using Holt's writings on the making of the film, I argue for a planetary poetics
Desistance Processes among Young Offenders Following Judicial Interventions
The idea for this book originated from a workshop on “Desistance Processes among Young Offenders following Judicial Interventions” held at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (MPICC) in Freiburg. Over the past three decades, there has been growing scientific interest in the discussion of why and how offenders desist from crime. Despite various approaches regarding the understanding of what is important for cessatio…
News From Home the redux version
In my 2004 article on Chantal Akerman's News From Home (1976), I deployed a Deleuzian reading of the film to release the film from being interpreted as manifesting the impossibility of a woman's desire (Stephen Heath) or a desire to return to the mother (Richard Kwietniowski), arguing instead that the indeterminacy of the final sequence opens out onto a transformative freedom from identity. In this article, I persist with this idea but reconsider…

From performing resistance to performing autonomy and back again
In this article, I explore the historical continuities and discontinuities between Alex Bag's performances of femininity in her seminal video series Untitled Fall '95 (1995) and Ann Hirsch's Scandalishious (2008-2010), a series of webcam videos on YouTube in which she appears as a character called Caroline Benton. Rather than a simply using these works to compare and contrast decades of feminist-inspired art, my exploration is informed by my re-e…
The poetic reactivation of historical time
In this article, I argue that Eija-Liisa Ahtila's techniques of narration in her six-screen film installation Where is Where? (2008) generate an affective, lived relation to historical time that counters its reduction in contemporary news media to a series of easily consumed and forgotten instants. Ahtila's multi-screen film, based in part on Frantz Fanon's account of the murder by two Algerian boys of their European playmate as revenge for the m…
Re-enacting cinema at the crossroads
Nicky Coutts’s film Passing Place (2009) consists of six re-enactments of the moments in which crossroads appear in the following films: Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Oedipus Rex (1967), Jim Jarmusch’s Down By Law (1986), Robert Zemeckis’s Castaway (2000), Maya Deren’s Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti (1985), Stuart Rosenberg’s Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Luis Buñuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972). The crossroads in Passing Place i…
