The Archaeology of Kṛṣṇa at Tiruveḷḷaṟai, a Site for Tamil Poetry in the 7th–9th Centuries
In many of the oldest known sites of the Pāṇḍya country located not far from the Kāverī River in Tamil Nadu, a dual Hindu obedience, Vaiṣṇava and Śaiva, was developed concomitantly. Alongside these Bhakti deities, others are present in these places of communication with the sacred. As stone figures attached to the site and texts evoking the place are the two means used to give form to their deities, one would expect these two mediums to interact,…
Les « rois anciens » du pays tamoul
Based on the particular case of the historiography of the Cōḻa dynasty in South India, this article ambitions to demonstrate how attention paid to texts sometimes leads to neglecting the context of their production and other types of sources that would however allow to give these texts a more historical value. Founded on the study of the Muttaraiyar that is a little-known dynasty of southern India based in the Andhra and Tamil countries between t…
The Carving of Kṛṣṇa's Legend
This paper emphasizes the role played by the sculptural tradition in the elaboration of religious narratives that today are mostly studied through texts. It aims to demonstrate that according to the documents we know, the legend of Kṛṣṇa has been built through one continuous dialogue between different media, namely texts and carvings, and different linguistic areas, Indo-Aryan and Dravidian. Taking the motif of the butter theft as a basis, we str…

Through the exploration of the pallavasite of Mahābalipuram which appears linked more specifically to the Devī-māhātmya , this paper attends to demonstrate that Lakṣmī, Viṣṇu’s consort is not the only possible representation of riches in a vaishnava context. The figures of the Killer of the buffalo (Mahiṣāmardinī) should also be understood as representatives of the prosperity of the kingdom, which is one of the major duties of the king. This godd…
The Harivaṃśa, the Goddess Ekānaṃśā, and the Iconography of the Vṛṣṇi Triads
Ancient Representations of Krsna against Kešin on Weight-stones : the Avatâra of Visnu and the Divinity of the Mahâbhârata Taking the exemplary case of the earliest iconography of the god Krsna, this paper analyses the relation between images and texts in ancient India. From the first to the third century, Krsna is regularly represented as a four-armed god with characteristic attributes. However on very rare objects, which were probably weight-st…
Les Vaikuṇṭha gupta de Mathura
During the gupta age some sculptures of a three-headed form of Visnu appeared in Mathura : Visnu is represented with one human head flanked by the muzzle of a lion and the snout of a boar. These images were first identified as being representations of Vaikuntha, a four-headed form of Visnu described in the Visnudharmottara-Purana, where the supplementary heads of the god symbolize the emanations springing up from the cosmogonie deity. This identi…
