Are low income children more physically active when they live in homes with bigger yards? A longitudinal analysis of the NET-Works Study
Choosing Life in the Black Community, Achieving the Dream: A Traumatic Stress Curriculum Pilot Study
Factor Analysis Test of an Ecological Model of Physical Activity Correlates
Objectives: The fit of measured variables into a social-ecological model of correlates of physical activity is rarely tested. In this study, we examined the factor structure of correlates of moderate/vigorous physical activity (MVPA) within a hypothesized social-ecological model. Methods: We measured 46 possible personal, social and environmental correlates of MVPA in 2779 adolescents participating in the Project EAT-2010 study. Confirmatory (CFA…

Unraveling the Enigma of Giorgio Morandi: A Psychoanalytic Strategy
Although the paintings of twentieth-century artist Giorgio Morandi are well known, as a man he remains an enigma. Basing their studies mostly on his outward behavior, biographers of Morandi have portrayed him as both a sociable presence in the Italian art world and a recluse, widely referred to as “the monk.” This essay seeks to construct an integrated view of Morandi by turning a psychoanalytic lens toward his art itself. The result suggests tha…

Matisse’s “Radical Invention”: A Window On Therapeutic Change
A recent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, “Matisse: Radical Invention 1913–1917,” focused on a breakthrough in Matisse’s art that the curators attribute to the impact of World War I. That this dramatic change may be linked to the trauma of war is explored by studying the art itself, biographical material, and the artist’s own insightful comments. The thesis is advanced that the catastrophe in Europe aggravated Matisse’s neurotic conflicts …
More Than Meets the Eye: Morandi’s Art and Analytic Listening
This study of Giorgio Morandi, the great twentieth-century Italian painter, departs from the model of Freud’s essay on Leonardo, in which he creates a psychodynamic hypothesis by linking the art with facts and conjecture about the artist’s life. Because personal information about Morandi is remarkably scarce, we can make few connections between his art and his individual psychology. But Morandi’s works can inform psychoanalysis and enhance analyt…
Loewald's “Binocular Vision” and the Art of Analysis
In his 1988 monograph on sublimation, Hans Loewald describes the process as a transformation of the drives aimed at re-creating what he presumes to be the subjective experience of infantile attachment. To describe this experience, he invokes a state of mind that he calls “binocular vision.” He maintains that this mental state may arise not only in activities usually associated with sublimation, such as the creation and enjoyment of art, but in al…
