Academe and Beyond: The Rayonnement of Impactful Mentoring
The articles in this special issue honoring Herrick Chapman convey the many ways that he is a role model as a scholar, teacher, and mentor. The ability to excel in all these areas is exceedingly rare. As John Henry Newman observed: "To discover and to teach are distinct functions; they are also distinct gifts, and are not commonly found united in the same person." In addition to a career with a significant scholarly impact, Herrick's exceptional …

Re-imagining Contested Communities: Connecting Rotherham through research
Re-Imagining Contested Communities: Connecting Rotherham through Research
This is a book that challenges contemporary images of place. Too often we are told about deprived neighbourhoods but rarely do the people who live in those communities get to shape the agenda and describe, from their perspective, what is important to them. In this book the process of re-imagining comes to the fore in a fresh and contemporary look at one UK town, Rotherham. Using history, artistic practice, writing, poetry, autobiography, and coll…

What Will We Have Ethnography Do
In this essay, we engage current discussions about refunctioning ethnography along lines that are meant to reimagine larger trajectories of ethnographic theory and practice. While these discussions are complicated and involved, much attention has been focused on refunctioning the mythological residue of Malinowksian modes of fieldwork from which springs trends for apprenticing graduate students to do and write up fieldwork. What has received less…
