Legitimation of earnings inequality between regular and non-regular workers
This study explores functions of labor market institutions in perpetuating earnings gap between different categories of workers with focusing on people’s views of earnings gap between regular and non-regular workers in Japan, South Korea, and the United States. An original cross-national factorial survey was conducted to measure the extent to which respondents admit earnings gap among workers with different characteristics. We found that Japanese…

The Nanjing Massacre. Changing Contours of History and Memory in Japan, China, and the U.S
In Japan, China, the United States and beyond, arguably no Japanese wartime atrocity against China is more widely known than the Nanjing Massacre. [1] Whatever the significance of mere name recognition, however, the history and memory of the Nanjing Massacre are profoundly complex. Indeed, even the phrase “Nanjing Massacre” (hereafter NM) remains contested, and to this day there are circles within which the words cannot be spoken without stirring…

Revising the Past, Complicating the Future
In this three part series, we introduce historical museums in Japan and their role in public education. Following this introduction to peace museums, Ms. Nishino Rumiko, a founder of the Women's Active Museum on War and Peace (WAM), introduces WAM's activities and the 2000 Citizens Tribunal on the 'comfort women'. The final article is by Mr. Kim Yeonghwan, the former associate director of Grassroots House Peace Museum who describes the peace and …

The Making of "The Rape of Nanking"
On December 13, 1937, the Japanese army attacked and captured the Chinese capital city of Nanjing, planting the rising-sun flag atop the city's outer walls. What occurred in the ensuing weeks and months has been the source of a tempestuous debate ever since. The book examines how views of the Nanjing Massacre have evolved in history writing and public memory in Japan, China, and the United States. For these nations, the question of how to treat t…

Monitoring the reproductive status of female gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) by measuring the steroid hormones in fecal samples
A Battle over History
Beginning on September 11, 1945, class A war crimes suspects were arrested, and by the end of December 1945, more than 100 former Japanese leaders were in Sugamo Prison. According to a poll conducted by the United Sates Strategic Bombing Survey after Japan's defeat, 44 percent of the Japanese people thought that Japan must become a more peaceful and democratic nation. Another poll, conducted among the Japanese residing in Beijing in 1945, showed …

A two‐step extraction method to measure fecal steroid hormones in female cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis)
We developed a two-step extraction method for measuring fecal steroid concentrations. In the first step, distilled water was used to extract steroids from fecal samples. In the second step, a mixture of organic solvents (hexane and ether) was used to re-extract water extracts that had been transferred to a glass tube. A portion of the upper layer of the organic solvents was transferred to separate assay-tubes for measurement of estradiol (E2) or …

Luteinizing hormone receptors in ovaries of the cynomolgus monkey ( Macaca fascicularis ) during the menstrual cycle
Ovarian luteinizing hormone (LH) receptors were characterized using ovarian tissues from 17 cynomolgus monkeys at different phases of the menstrual cycle. Low binding affinity receptors for 125 I‐LH were observed throughout the menstrual cycle. The binding affinity of these receptors for LH ( 10 M −1 ) was approximately the same as that of ovarian LH receptors previously reported in human and nonhuman primates. In addition, high‐affinity receptor…
Serum chorionic gonadotropin levels determined by radioreceptorassay and early diagnosis of pregnancy in the cynomolgus monkey ( Macaca fascicularis )
The radioreceptorassay developed to determine serum luteinizing hormone level in the cynomolgus monkey was evaluated for its usefulness in early pregnancy diagnosis by the detection of serum chorionic gonadotropin (CG). Blood samples were collected at weekly intervals from the 1st to the 5th week after conception to determine changes in circulating levels of CG. In the pregnancy cases, serum CG levels increased to above 50 μg/ml in almost all ani…
