From Friends to Lovers: Understanding Motivations and Barriers in AI Companionship
Artificial intelligence (AI) companions are increasingly used for social, emotional, and sometimes romantic fulfillment, raising questions about how people perceive and engage with these technologies. This study explored attitudes toward AI companionship and whether interviewer type (AI, human, or unmoderated) affects disclosure or engagement. A mixed-methods design was employed with 135 adult participants, who completed structured interviews inc…
New Upper Palaeolithic Rock Art Complex in the Tejo Valley, Central Portugal
This short report presents newly discovered Palaeolithic rock art panels within the Ocreza Valley (Lower Tejo River), central Portugal, comprising several engraved zoomorphic figures, including auroch and horse. Together, they substantially increase upon the previous headless horse found in 2000, and the style of the engravings is identical to Upper Palaeolithic open-air engravings from other areas of western Iberia, including the Côa, Sabor, Tua…

Identification of organic material in Los Buitres 1 rock art shelter, Badajoz, Spain

New Insights into Timber-Framing in Shropshire: Findings from the Tilley Timber Project
The Tilley Timber Project accurately dated 21 buildings with a total of 33 phases of development by tree-ring analysis in and around Tilley, a small village in north Shropshire. A spike of timber construction in Tilley when decorative wall-framing was at its height is identified. Using this data together with 261 previously published tree-ring dates, the datable changes in the style of timber-framing across the county are summarised and some of t…

A discovery of possible Upper Palaeolithic Parietal art in Cathole Cave, Gower Peninsula, South Wales
In September 2010 an engraving was discovered in Cathole Cave on the Gower peninsula in South Wales which has been interpreted as a possible representation of a cervid. Uranium series dating of calcite which overlays part of the engraving has been dated to approx. 12,500 BP suggesting a possible Upper Palaeolithic date for the figure
Signposts in the Landscape: Marks and Identity among the Negev Highland Bedouin
Over the course of the past millennia, pastoral nomads migrated from the Arabian Peninsula and neighbouring regions into the Negev desert. Particularly with the last major wave of Bedouin migration in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these groups introduced the 'Bedouin Phase' into Negev rock art, a tradition that was central to the Negev Bedouin culture up until the mid to late twentieth century. The 'Bedouin Phase' is mostly made up of …
Hillforts of the Cheshire Ridge

It aimed to develop understanding of the chronology and role of the hillforts and encourage local interest and involvement in their maintenance
The relevance of watery soundscapes in a ritual context
It is becoming increasing clear that the visual archaeological record, as witnessed through those elements of the site that remain visible (in the case of Neolithic chambered monuments, the surviving stone architecture) is just one sensory element. For this short paper, and pertinent to this journal issue, we will focus our attentions on what Scandinavian archaeologist Joakim Goldhaln refers to as non-visual experiences and perceptions, in partic…

The “Great Humanitarian”: Herbert Hoover, the Relief of Belgium, and the Reconstruction of Europe after War I
On August 10, 1914, Herbert Hoover turned forty years old. A prosperous American mining engineer living in London, he was at the pinnacle of his profession, with business interests on every continent except Antarctica. He was also restless, confiding to a friend that “just making money isn't enough.” He wanted, he said, to “get in the big game somewhere”—the “big game” of public life

New over old: An image-based reassessment of Le Déhus passage grave’s ‘ Le Gardien du Tombeau ’, Guernsey
This paper discusses in depth a recent discovery, among other observations, made by the authors in 2015 at the Le Déhus passage grave in eastern Guernsey, Channel Islands. The discovery involves the probable medieval or post-medieval pigment enhancement of a Neolithic carving of a figure, arguably a warrior, known as the Le Gardien du Tombeau. We regard this enhancement as an act of Christianisation. The Christianisation of later prehistoric site…
The Curious Case of St Caffo’s Church, Anglesey, Wales
The Christianisation of later prehistoric sites has been hitherto rarely discussed (e.g. Holtorf 1997). However, it is becoming increasingly clear that many churchyards, in particular within the west of Britain possess histories that extend way before their current use and meaning. In this brief note, the authors describe and contextualise a recent discovery of a later prehistoric engraved bowl-mark that was found within the churchyard of St Caff…

Hunting and Gender as Reflected in the Central Negev Rock Art, Israel
There are thousands of panels with hundreds of thousands of petroglyphs that occupy the rock outcropping of the Negev Highlands in southern Israel. These include abstract, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic elements, which are sometimes presented as hunting scenes. In this paper we will define hunting scene, review the themes and relate these figures to the economy, mundane, and spiritual realms of the artist. We argue that a clear panel grammar is i…

Indications of an Acoustic Landscape at Bryn Celli Ddu, Anglesey, North Wales
This Note reports on an initial observation made in 2012 of a distinct sound reflection of a percussive incident noise made at the restored Neolithic chambered tomb of Bryn Celli Ddu that emanated from an outcrop of rock in the ritual landscape surrounding the monument. The outcrop is marked with numerous cupmarks, presumably singling it out as a place of some kind of significance in Neolithic times. Audio recording of the point-specific echo in …
