Social Participation as a Moderator in Spousal Frailty Interdependence Among Chinese Middle-Aged and Older Couples
Accumulating evidence suggests health similarities between married couples, yet few research has attempted to examine spousal dyadic dynamics of frailty, a debilitating age-related syndrome on the global agenda of public health priority. This study analyzed whether changes in frailty were interdependent between spouses and explored the moderating role of social participation in buffering the impact of a partner’s frailty. We utilized nationwide d…

Health-related quality of life associated with sensory impairment in Chinese middle-aged and older adults
BACKGROUND: The impact of sensory impairment (SI) on individual multidimensional health has not been adequately explored in developing countries. This study examined the association of hearing or/and visual impairment with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the Chinese middle-aged and older population, and further explored potential discrepancies in associations by gender and rural-urban residence. METHODS: This cohort study used four-wave…
The Effect of Educational Expectations on Children’s Cognition and Depression
Cognitive and psychological conditions in childhood will have an important impact on adult life. There is relatively little literature on the impact of educational expectations on children's cognition and psychological health from the perspective of urban and rural differences. Based on the cohort data of the CFPS from 2012 and 2016, this study screened a total of 994 children aged 10-15 to study the effects of parents' educational expectations a…
Migration in Bronze Age southern China
Reconstructing the history of elite communication in ancient China benefits from additional archaeological evidence. We combine textual analysis with new human stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data from two Chu burials in the Jingzhou area to reveal significant dietary differences among Chu nobles of the middle Warring States period (c. 350 BC). This research provides important new information on the close interaction between the aristocratic f…
Additive interaction between potentially modifiable risk factors and ethnicity among individuals in the Han, Tujia and Miao populations with first-ever ischaemic stroke
This is the first case-control study examining modifiable risk factors for ischaemic stroke among the Han population and two ethnic minorities (Tujia and Miao) in China. Some differences were observed in the impact of risk factors among these ethnic groups. Our results may help interpret health-related data, including surveillance and research, when developing strategies for stroke prevention
Does the duration of childhood starvation affect life at age 45 or older in China? The mediating role of socioeconomic and health statuses
This study investigated the impact of the duration of childhood starvation experience on life satisfaction among Chinese people and examined whether and how socioeconomic and health statuses mediated this association. Data were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationwide social survey project that was conducted among Chinese individuals aged 45 or older in 2014. The results show that the duration of childhood sta…
Hydrogeology of the Pearl River Delta, southern China
The study describes the hydrogeological setting of the Pearl River Delta, a sub-tropical area of southern China encompassing the metropolises of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau. In the last 40 years, a booming economy and a population of about 60 million has increased water demand satisfied by a huge system of dams and reservoirs. Aquifers in the studied area are underutilized and only a few recent studies have addressed hydrogeological …
