  • The Chiltern Grim's Ditch

    Open Access•James Dyer, James F Dyer•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1963

In 1931 Dr O. G. S. Crawford published his survey of the Chiltern Grim's Ditch in ANTIQUITY, and in the following issue Mr M. W. Hughes related it to Cuthwulf's expedition to the Chilterns in A.D. 571. It is my intention in this paper to show that Mr Hughes had no evidence for so dating the earthwork and to demonstrate that it most probably belongs to the Iron Age. Closer study on the ground has shown that it is cut by two Roman roads, and is mor…

The linear dyke known as Dray's Ditches, about half a mile long, runs at right angles to the Icknield Way, whose modern track approaches it near its mid-point. The name ‘Dray's Ditche’ first appears on a map engraved by Thomas Jeffrys in 1765, and its course is marked, between Great Bramingham and the Old Bedford Road, on a map of 1774. In 1540 Leland wrote that ‘in the hye way I saw hard on eche syde 3 longe trenches, as they had been for Men of…
