  • Collingwood on Spinoza and the Social-Political Role of Art

    Chinatsu Kobayashi, Mathieu Marion•ARTICLE•Human Affairs•2024•References: 12

We argue that the proper context for understanding Collingwood’s The Principles of Art is his claim that it has bearing “upon the condition of art in England in 1937”. We thus argue that he formulated a philosophical argument that underpins avant-garde dramatic poetry and theatrical practices (Eliot, Auden and the Group Theatre), taking his interpretation of Spinoza’s Ethics 5 prop. 3 to be the book’s central thesis: it is through art that one kn…

  • Dialectic, the Dictum de Omni and Ecthesis

Michel Crubellier, Manier Marion et al.•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2019

In this paper, we provide a detailed critical review of current approaches to ecthesis in Aristotle’s Prior Analytics, with a view to motivate a new approach, which builds upon previous work by Marion & Rückert (2016) on the dictum de omni. This approach sets Aristotle’s work within the context of dialectic and uses Lorenzen’s dialogical logic, hereby reframed with use of Martin-Löf's constructive type theory as ‘immanent reasoning’. We then prov…

    Open Access•Manier Marion, Mathieu Marion•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 37

Open Access•Benoît Castelnérac, Manier Marion et al.•ARTICLE•The Baltic International Yearbook…•2013

This paper is an interim report of joint work begun in (Castelnérac & Marion 2009) on dialectic from Parmenides to Aristotle. In the first part we present rules for dialectical games, understood as a specific form of antilogikê developed by philosophers, and explain some of the key concepts of these dialectical games in terms of ideas from game semantics. In the games we describe, for a thesis A asserted by the answerer, a questioner must elicit …

In this article, the authors explore an intuitive model of time worked through in Gadamer's hermeneutics, but which is rejected by Collingwood. To illustrate this, the authors examine the responses of both to the problem of transposition, upon which Dilthey's philosophy is purportedly founded. The authors then discuss the underlying notions of time, demonstrating that Ricoeur had a greater appreciation of the issue, given his observation that Col…

  • Gadamer and Collingwood on Temporal Distance and Understanding

Open Access•Chinatsu Kobayashi, Manier Marion et al.•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2011•Cited by: 1

In this paper, we begin by suggesting an intuitive model of time embodying a notion of temporal distance that we claim is at work in Gadamer's hermeneutics, while it is rejected in Collingwood's theory of interpretation. To show this, after a brief review of the influence of Collingwood on Gadamer and of their disagreement over the possibility of recovering an author's intention, we examine in turn their answers to the problem of transposition, u…

  • Sraffa and Wittgenstein: Physicalism and constructivism

Manier Marion, Mathieu Marion•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 19

After a brief review of facts and hypotheses concerning Piero Sraffa's intellectual exchanges with the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and their content, a brief presentation of some of the basic ideas of Productions of Commodities by Means of Commodities is given, on the basis of which I argue, first, that Sraffa's ‘objectivism’ in economics is closely related to the ‘physicalism’ towards which Wittgenstein moved soon after his return to Cambrid…

  • Qu'est-ce que l'inférence ? Une relecture du Tractatus logico-philosophicus

Manier Marion, Mathieu Marion•ARTICLE•Archives de Philosophie•2001•Cited by: 1
