    Stephen Blum•ARTICLE•Archiv für Musikwissenschaft•2024

In a 1904 essay on Isadora Duncan’s “Melodic Dance,” E. M. von Hornbostel articulated central premises of his work in comparative musicology: melodic movement acts “in a far more direct manner” than rhythm, and “among all ‘natural humans’ there is no speech without gestures, no song without dance.” His conception of a “common stock of human psycho-physical aptitudes” bears comparison with Aby Warburg’s interest in the “primeval vocabulary of the …

  • Chapter 11 Modes of Theorizing in Iranian Khorasan

    Stephen Blum•CHAPTER•Theorizing the local•2009

This chapter discusses “theorizing” as an activity that prepares and accompanies the acquisition, retention, and expansion or contraction of musical knowledge. Using some typical formats for theoretical statements among bards (baxši) in Khorasan (Iran), the author considers theorizing in a comparative context that extends from Iran to Europe and South Asia. Theorizing, here, takes in many sorts of “episodes of generalizing.” Theorizing begins, it…

Interest in operation of styles in their social contexts is not merely concern of musicologists during past century but extends across substantial body of European and Asian literature from Middle Ages to present. At times, however, ethnomusicologists have discussed problems of analytic method in rather parochial manner, without sufficient consideration of underlying principles of our discipline in broad, comparative context. • Studies in Blackfoot Indian Musical Culture, Part III: Three Genres of Song

    Bruno Nettl, Stephen Blum•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1968

In general, the Blackfoot musical style conforms to that of other Plains Indian tribes. The majority of songs belong to what we will call the Plains (Nettl 1954:24-29). This includes a tense vocal production with pulsations, singing in the high part of the range, a kind of structure in which the total rendition of a song includes modified repetition of the whole melody except for the beginning, descending and terrace-shaped melodic contours, and …
