Feng Chen, Chen Feng•ARTICLE•Polity•1997•Cited by: 12

The post-Mao leadership of China turned to a strategy of eudaemonic legitimacy after the earlier strategies of ideology and revolutionary charisma were perceived to have failed during the Cultural Revolution. Yet this new strategy created significant long-term problems. The shift to defining socialism in terms of increasing economic productivity eroded the Communist Party's claim to a monopoly on political expression while the willingness to subo…

  • China's road to the construction of labor rights

    Open Access•Feng Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2016•Cited by: 11•References: 12

The stage of state-building in the labor sector at which a working-class movement arose is crucial for the subsequent development of state-labor relations. In contrast with the experience of western countries and authoritarian developing nations, the People's Republic of China's (PRC's) strong pre-existing labor institutions pre-empted organized labor mobilization at the beginning of capitalist development. The state has since then carried out a …

  • Ideologies and framing labour activism in China

Feng Chen, Chen Feng•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2024•Cited by: 4

Contesting the views that overlook the role of ideology in Chinese labour resistance, this paper argues that ideology accounts for variations of labour activism not only in the perception of labour rights but also in goals and tactics. By using the framing theory, the study explores how ideology shapes labour activism in China. It demonstrates that as alternative ideologies are suppressed in society, labour activists have attempted to construct t…

  • Against the State: Labor Protests in China in the 1950s

    Open Access•Feng Chen, Chen Feng et al.•ARTICLE•Modern China•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Deriving evidence from Neican (Internal Reference), this article demonstrates that labor unrest in the 1950s was rooted in inherent tensions in the state’s efforts to reconstruct state-labor relations. With the state’s increasing control over industry and the emerging paternalistic institutions, workers came to see the state, as it presented itself, as the patron of their interests, and they expected its economic protection. Consequently, the dis…

  • Between the State and Labour: The Conflict of Chinese Trade Unions' Double Identity in Market Reform

    Open Access•Feng Chen•ARTICLE•The China Quarterly•2003

Chinese official union's reactions to labour contentions can be explained by its double institutional identity as both a state apparatus and the labour organization. Before the reform, the union did not confront tense conflicts between its double identity, as its representation function was absorbed by the paternalist state. As the state retreats from socialist paternalism, the union finds that its double identity becomes contradictory. What role…

  • Effects of Urban Vegetation on Urban Air Quality

    Dennis Y C Leung, Jeanie K Y Tsui et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 85

Vegetation has been well recognized for its ability in improving air quality and alleviating global warming. Tree planting has been used to mitigate urban heat island phenomena, sequester carbon dioxide, and help to trap air pollutants on leaves. Because some plant species emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), planting of some cultivars increase ozone and particulate matter ambient concentration and hence deteriorate air quality. More…

Open Access•Shulong Yu, Yujiang Yuan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Three robust tree-ring density chronologies were developed for the western Tianshan Mountains of northwestern China. The chronologies were significantly correlated and form a regional chronology (GLD). The GLD had significant and positive correlations with temperature of warm seasons. Based on this relationship, the mean minimum temperatures of May to August were reconstructed using the GLD chronology for the period AD 1657 to 2008. The temperatu…
