  • The “two-hit” storm

Open Access•Hong Huang, Siyi Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinical patterns of pediatric respiratory infections have undergone significant changes, with increasing attention on the immunological imprint left by Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), commonly known as Long COVID. A perplexing clinical phenomenon has been observed: some children with a history of Long COVID exhibit a disproportionately severe inflammatory response and extensive lung injury…

  • Benefit Appeals in Livestreaming E-Commerce

Teli Xian, Zheng Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Advertising Research•2026

Benefit appeals represent a commonly used advertising tactic for improving customer response, yet their effectiveness in multimedia livestreaming e-commerce remains unverified. To address this issue, we develop a multi-study framework to investigate the effectiveness of benefit appeals with livestreaming video data and corresponding TikTok sales data. In Study 1, we examine the correlational relationships between benefit appeals and sales with tw…

  • Fine-Grained Emotion Comprehension

Open Access•Zheng Fang, Zhen Liu et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2025

The rapid advancement of deep learning and the exponential growth of multimodal data have led to increased attention on multimodal emotion analysis and comprehension in affect computing. While existing multimodal works have achieved notable results in emotion recognition, several challenges remain. First, the scarcity of public large-scale multimodal emotion datasets is attributed to the high cost of manual annotation and the subjectivity of hand…

A survey of 438 students from four universities was conducted to analyze their adoption of AI, learning dispositions, and behavioral patterns. The research aimed to understand the current state of GPT adoption and the connection between student learning approaches and their use of these technologies. Find…

  • A novel, human-in-the-loop computational grounded theory framework for big social data

Open Access•Lama Alqazlan, Zheng Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2025

The availability of big data has significantly influenced the possibilities and methodological choices for conducting large-scale behavioural and social science research. In the context of qualitative data analysis, a major challenge is that conventional methods require intensive manual labour and are often impractical to apply to large datasets. One effective way to address this issue is by integrating emerging computational methods to overcome …

  • When and How Artificial Intelligence Augments Employee Creativity

Ning Jia, Nan Jia et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2024

Can artificial intelligence (AI) assist human employees in increasing employee creativity? Drawing on research on AI–human collaboration, job design, and employee creativity, we examine AI assistance in the form of a sequential division of labor within organizations: in a task, AI handles the initial portion, which is well-codified and repetitive, and employees focus on the subsequent portion, involving higher-level problem-solving. First, we pro…

  • Empathetic Response Generation With Self and Other-Imagine Graph

Open Access•Xun Wang, Zhen Liu et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2024

Empathy, an essential quality in daily human conversations, plays a crucial role in dialogue systems. In recent years, there has been a surge of interest among researchers in developing empathetic response generation. However, existing methods often ignore the high-level process of generating empathy-imagination, which involves consciously putting oneself in the other person's shoes during a conversation. To solve this critical problem, we propos…

  • An Empirical Study of User Engagement in Influencer Marketing on Weibo and WeChat

Open Access•Jun Wang, Yang Yu et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2023

Understanding social media users’ engagement is one of the most crucial steps in a successful deployment of an influencer marketing campaign. On mainstream social media platforms, opinion leaders are the major channels to spread opinions and media content to a large population of consumers. Therefore, analyzing how users respond to the blogs of opinion leaders lies at the core of understanding user engagement in social media. In this article, to …

  • The relationship between social support and depression among HIV-positive men who have sex with men in China

Open Access•Run Wang, Zheng Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: HIV and mental health problems are a global syndemic. One key issue is that the significant mental health problems among people vulnerable to acquiring or living with HIV have not been fully addressed. Access to social support has been one of the biggest challenges for HIV-positive men who have sex with men (HIV+ MSM). Lower social support has been linked to more severe depression symptoms. However, the mechanisms underlying the ass…

  • Prevalence of SOEs and intergenerational income persistence

Open Access•Haichao Fan, Zheng Fang et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

This paper evaluates the impact of state‐owned enterprises (SOEs) on intergenerational income persistence in China. Using population census, we first estimate the intergenerational income elasticities (IGEs) across Chinese prefecture‐level cities. We then find that the prevalence of SOEs in a city is negatively associated with its IGE. The estimation using the geographic variation in SOEs created by the ‘156 Projects’ as an instrumental variable …

  • Evaluation of Multiradar Multisensor and Stage IV Quantitative Precipitation Estimates during Hurricane Harvey

Shang Gao, Jiaqi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2021

Radar-based quantitative precipitation estimate (QPE) serves as input for flood forecasting, and its importance gets magnified during catastrophic storms, e.g., Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The record-breaking rainfall from Hurricane Harvey covered vast spatial extents and lasted for a 5-day period, providing a unique chance for evaluating radar errors, especially their spatiotemporal dependence. Using the rainfall data of Hurricane Harvey, the auth…

  • Covariance Matrix Estimation via Network Structure

Wei Lan, Zheng Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2018

In this article, we employ a regression formulation to estimate the high-dimensional covariance matrix for a given network structure. Using prior information contained in the network relationships, we model the covariance as a polynomial function of the symmetric adjacency matrix. Accordingly, the problem of estimating a high-dimensional covariance matrix is converted to one of estimating low dimensional coefficients of the polynomial regression …
